PRETTY FILM; PRETTY WOMAN
Lets keep this review simple, I don’t suppose film got its name from the looks of Julia Roberts (Vivian Ward) me thinks the pretty woman is the character of
Julia Roberts in this film, its a fairy tale as advertised on its cover, I agree, don’t compare it to reality of life.
Richard Gere (Edward Lewis) is a very rich man, lives in a penthouse with shrewd business sense, he comes to Los Angeles and gets lost on a Boulevard, he asks a girl on the road for directions, she says give me 5 dollars I will help you, if you give me twenty dollars I will show you where the stars live. Edward likes her attitude they haggle and come to an agreement, she must become his date for 6 days for three thousand dollars, he says he has many interesting places to go. One of them turns out to be the Opera.
Even though Julia Roberts is a hooker, she does not behave like one, it happens in fairy tales, she is a good hearted girl with dreams in her heart, she has a friend her name is Kit (Laura San Giacomo) they both are in the same business, its not important what business they are, the business is just mentioned in the film to give attitude to the leading girl of this film, she has a wide smile. Teeth shining with classic actress manners, Edward says I buy companies and sell them in pieces for more money than he pays to buy them, he says we both screw people for money.
What is likeable in this movie is 2 strange people coming from 2 different walks of life far away from the influence of each other gets to know each other and start enjoying themselves, its not strange it happens in life, the chemistry between Gere and Julia was fantastic on screen, they both have charming smiles and good personality. The contrast between each others life style was highlighted by the clothes they wear in the beginning and their amusement with each other, what makes them notice each other personally was too beautifully filmed, slowly they become drawn towards each other what with Gere buying expensive clothes for her to take her to parties and meet very stuck up interesting people was well sketched.
Where is a girl in the whole world who will not fall for the guy buying her expensive clothes, Julia even gets a chance to get even with the snotty sales girl in a big shop, she says you work on commission and you did not respond to my enquiry, you made a big mistake, she gets her beautiful clothes, the RED DRESS was worth whatever money paid to buy it, she looked fantastic in the RED DRESS. The language used by Julia is a bit different from the day to day language we use in our lives, so it looked good on ears to hear such crude and frank sentences coming out of the mouth of a good looking perfect actress. There is another attractive point well presented in this film, Julia adjusting to the use of fork and the type of people who are found in circles who own penthouse, that was very amusing.
Attending Opera she asks where is the band was pure funny, some dialogues and situation bring good amount of smiles on our faces. You can say its a romantic comedy with lots of material to dream about, a movie which makes you forget yourself go with the flow, even when both of them fight you are surely on the side of the guy, its very obvious guys are always right and women are impractical and wrong dreamers cut away from reality living in dreams, this is their biggest drawback. The story of the film has a feel of Cinderella atleast the core is like that of Cinderella. This is one of the adult love story which came after a long time, 90% of the films being made these days are targeting teens or post teen audiences. We adults do need entertainment.
Director Gary Marshall must be applauded for the selection of his lead pair, any other pair would not have lent the class this movie has in its present version. They looked almost made for each other, their romance was being felt in our veins, the quality of happiness was jumping out of the screen and entering into us. The picnic in the park and you are forgiven for coming late are some great feel goods. The kind desk manager and his relationship with Julia, Barney Thompson (Hector Elizondo) was touching and almost felt real and emotive, he develops a respect for her and fondness towards her problems and life was almost feel able within us.
Comedy was ever present right from the start, Gere says you cannot charge me for giving directions, Julia says I can do anything, I am not the one who is lost his way. This movie is deep upto the scene itself, there is no more depth, the characters are what they are shown on the screen to be only. Just understand the scene and you are in the movie, let your mind rest and relax on the chair you are sitting, the visuals are the main part of the movie, there are no guessing, no deductions, no tensions about what comes next, you are home free to be fully occupied with acting.
Cool movie enjoyed myself and my gang they all came out with as wide smiles as that of Julia, many of my friends saw it for the second time and the third time because its a guys movie and they are shown in a position of prestige and power. I will be happy with any movie which shows us guys better than women, its the way things should be, without the kind heart of Richard Gere where will Vivian be, he rescues her from the filth and gives her a life which she always dreamed about since childhood. GUYS BE HAPPY YOU HAVE SCORED OVER THEM WITH THIS FILM.
Yo !! Light movies drive out your blues a long way away.
