I have read everything written by Joseph Campbell and I am totally in love with his work and his derivative philosophy, which has also influenced a lot of filmmakers and political figures.
The power of myth novel is taken from the lengthy conversation/interview held by Bill Moyers of Joseph Campbell, which also turn into a short TV series. Joseph Campbell is an authority figure when it comes to mythology and comparative religious studies, and the famous star wars movie is inspired by his work.
In this novel Campbell talks about the value and place of myth in our life and what role they have played in psychological evolution of human being. At places he talks about how native Indians and other tribes use to hold a ritual in which boys are taken and converted into man, even though the transition is physical, but they use to see it as a way a little boy who takes a journey from a protective motherly love to a manhood where he have to earn respect. These rituals also played the role of preparing the boys for his adulthood responsibilities.
It also talks about the hero’s journey, according to Campbell all the great heroic journeys happened because the hero, the individual is ready to acknowledge his bliss and follow it. According to him, every individual human being gets a call to this fascinating journey but most people ignore it.
My advice to you is don’t try to finish it in one sitting, but try to devour it, one bite at a time.
