A January Weekend in 2009 If you’re in Kuala Lumpur it is natural to hear people talking about Port Dickson but it was only well into our years there that we took a trip to it.

Our greatly anticipated week end visit to Port Dickson, a beach near Kuala Lumpur, was not quite as I had anticipated.

Wild Goose Chase My son had told us that there was a German woman who had some kind of decent part of the beach and, by googling this information, I had formed a very fancy picture in my mind.

Even as we set out to pick up a friend, we encountered a mini adventure as the key to the car's petrol filling thingy was lost. So although we left home at a little past 8, we only started out at well past 11! I also then discovered that my husband had printed out the wrong things. Mea culpa as the busy man would hardly have had the time to see what was needed from the links I sent.

After a loooong drive past miles and miles of palm plantations, we reached Port Dickson but could not locate the German lady's place as we had no info on hand!

Wan Loong Chinese Temple So we drove on till we came to a Chinese Temple on a small hillock. Along the 7th mile of the coastal road, opposite the PD World Marina Resort, this temple, to the left of the main road, is a must-visit. The name of the temple signifies Dragon of the Clouds. The architecture is charming and it has high walls which make it look like a fortress. Apparently, it is a mini Great Wall of China. Inside you will find many gods including Kuan Yin(goddess of mercy) and the Monkey King. If you have read something about these mythical characters, you will appreciate it better. It is also called the Temple with the Legendary Lucky Turtle as it is claimed that, by touching one of the turtles, you get lucky. If you do the pradakshina of the temple, you can see many exotic statues of gods and mythological characters.

Yun Long Seafood Restaurant Facing the Temple was a Restoren and we went there for a small meal. After visiting the temple, I went in and discovered Christina who showed us the way to the German lady, Celina. After discovering that the German lady's beach had next to nothing, we returned to Christina for lunch. It was nice of her to tell us the way to another person’s restaurant. As for the food, I can’t remember what we had but it must have been good. If I get another chance, I’ll do what I advise you to: find out what dishes are best liked online and try those.  I should have ordered clams or crab…

Bitching about the Beach Finally we did go to the beach. Due to the low tide, maybe, there was no sea nearby. Just clayey sand. I think I did visit PD again with another friend but that time too it was miles and miles of sand. I sat in the wet  sand and played with my friend’s daughter.

The drive Both ways it is the drive more than PD itself which is so charming. So I advise you to be leisurely and stop at the Tamil temples and other little wayside sights.

On our way back we passed Dragon fruit plantations. That was a real sight!
