The poetess is calling upon the famous sufi poet waris shah , saying when heer a daughter of Punjab cried you wrote epic about her plight . Today when millions of our daughters are crying why are you so silent . Come out of your grave oh waris shah and see what is happening to the country. Rivers are full of blood
Sometime around 1947 when Amrita Pritam wrote these lines it is said that people used to keep them in their pocket , they read them and cried. These lines epitomize the pain and agony that partition caused to people in those times.

Plot
There are very few movies which are able to do justice to the book they are based on.
Pinjar based on Amrita Pritam?s gyan peeth award winning book Pinjar is one of those few movies. I am sure Amrita herself would have approved the way her creation is made alive By dr. Chandra Prakash Dwivedi.
On the surface Pinjar is the story of Puro.
Puro who was abducted by Rashid, Rashid who despite being an abductor was far better a human being then those who took lives in the name of religion.
Puro whose parents refused to accept her back for they feared the rejection by this hollow institution we call society. They abandoned their darling daughter in the middle of night with nowhere to go cause their so called prestige was far precious then their daughter.
Puro who knowing what it means to lose one?s identity , what it means to be away from your loved ones has finally found her solace in helping out girls of same fate as hers.
It is a story of changing definitions. The same family who refused to accept puro later became ready to accept another one of their abducted daughter. Why?? Cause the definitions of prestige has changed then , it was happening to everybody in ?society?. When it happens to everybody it could be justified . Ironic ?..isn?t it?
As a whole its story of thousands of girls like puro and thousand families attached with them who faced the dire consequences of religious fanaticism during partition.
Star cast
Urmila as puro and Manoj Bajpai as Rashid were at their careers best in their respective roles.
I couldn?t help admiring the rangeela girl for her never to be forgotten performance as puro and for this reason she will be in my five best actress list.
The plot itself is so powerful that mediocre actors like Samir Suri as ramchand, priyanshu chatterjee as trilok and sandali sinha as lajo ended up with very nice performances.
The three most important people who are needed to be thanked for making this great movie are :
Director Dr. Chandra Prakash Dwivedi for his wonderful direction.
Santosh Thunidiyil for cinematography. The ambience of year 1947 seems as genuine as it could have been.
Muneesh Sappel for costume designing .
Music
Uttam Singh as a music director has done his job wonderfully. The tones may not be catchy but then they are not supposed to be. Guljaar as usual never disappoints when it comes to lyrics. Zehra nigaah?s lyrics are beautiful and pertinent.
Watna ve ?.. is very melodious and it make our heart feel the agony of partition.
Maar udaari?.. and charkha chalati maa?. fits beautifully into the plot.
Ajj akkha waris shah nu? classical as it is ,so not all may like it But for these precious lyrics quality couldn?t be compromised .
Verdict
Among those sob sob movies of shahrukh khan, gawdy comedies of govinda and ?god knows what? kinda movies of salmaan once in a while somebody like Dr. Dwivedi gives movie making a serious thought and come up with a movie like Pinjar.
Pinjar will touch you heart in many ways. It arises many questions yet unanswered.
Why is it that the innocent mass suffer the the atrocities when it is only a handful of selfish people who make it happen ?
Why is it that a girl is forsaken forever by her own people for no fault of hers?
Why do we need more then one god ? If at all we do why do we need to fight in its name?
Despite all these questions and many more there is one thing which make me believe that things will change one day , the world will be a better place to live. This reason for believing so is that humanity survived it all.
