The Philips DVD 727 K Slim - popularly advertised with Ramu Kaka placing a chappati in the disc tray....

Looks

Sleek, silver, mirror frontage, very few buttons. The piece is very sleek looking, but thats about it on the looks.

Features

Supposedly loaded with features - Dolby 5.1, fully functional remote, progressive scan, all kinds of functionalities including different sound settings, screen settings etc.,

Performance

The player is pretty robust and gives a good playback and sound - of course a lot if it depends on your sound system and TV. I am using it with my Phillips 29 flat, which is why I bought the Philips DVD in the first place.

Cons

body

I don't believe Phillips could have been so stupid. The legs that the DVD stands on has screws that are protruding out. I put it on top of my Pioneer CD player and it resulted in a lot of scratches on my pioneer. Now I have to keep a cloth on my Pioneer - this of course does not permit ventilation

progressive scan

99 % of Indian TV's don't have progressive scan, so this feature is pretty redundant. I have heard the quality is awesome. However I have a 29'' flat TV from Phillips and if this doesnt have progressive scan, very few more TV's will have it. If your TV doesnt have it, then unless you are replacing your TV, progressive scan is useless

Remote - grrrrr

Can you believe it ??You cannot function this player without a remote. You can just about hit the play button - no pause, no chapter selection, no disc preview, no slow motion, - nothing. If you get a phone call in the middle of a movie, you miss it or you start from the beginning. The remote is not very sturdy so the danger of having a non functional player if you lose your remote is very high. Without the remote, you might as well shut off yoru player or throw it away.

Endnote

Would not recommend this player to anyone . My remote has note been functioning for over two weeks now, took it to the service center, they did something, by the time I got back it was not working again. I cannot play any movies, and getting hold of another remote is getting very difficult :(. Guys at Phillips, wake up ! - This is common sense and logic
