I picked up my Philips DVD 570M some 3 years or more ago from a Philips Seconds Sale. The actual price of the player being Rs. 22000; they were selling for Rs. 11000 under seconds sale. There was nothing really wrong with the player upon asking the Philips Technicians so I bought it. This was my first DVD player.

Features are very basic. Plays DVD, VCD, Audio CD and thats it. The design of this player is for Mini systems and it has those typical compact dimensions. 3 Speed Slow Motion play is possible and this is very useful. Since my work relates to Animation this feature comes very handy.

Frame by Frame play is possible. Two speed Forward and Reverse. Common DVD player features are also present. Shuffle Play, Repeat One/All, Camera Angle, Subtitle Control, Audio Mode Control, Section Play Repeat wherein you give give a start and stop point of a movie and the DVD player will repeat only that section (Feature better known as A-B Repeat). The Graphic User Interface is also very easy to use and so is the Remote Control.

Most player functions are on the remote. There are no Dolby Digital or DTS Dedcoders onboard. Firmware upgrade is also possible. I guess this means that the ROM chip on the player can be upgraded/over written so that pirated discs that are not finalized well can be read and off course other improvements too.

On the Connectivity front this player is good. Composite, Component, S-Video for Video. Analog Audio, Coaxial and Optical for Audio. One good thing I like about this player is there are two sets of Audio Video Analog Outputs. I do not own a Home Theatre and hence use this player for my CDs and DVDs. The player can be always connected to the Television and my Amplifier at the same time. I feed my Amp with just the Left and Right Audio Output and feed the Television with both Audio/Video.

This player is not the best there is around. Sound and Picture is very good but when it comes to very fast moving images jitters or pixel break up on the specific object moving fast on the screen can be noticed with ease. This player is more dedicated for DVD and CD Audio. There is nothing much you can do while playing VCDs and when you want to go to a particular part on the VCD. All you can do is forward/reverse to the point you like to start viewing. Resume play works for all Disc formats.

This player is sensitive to DVDs that are not finalized well and even discs that have scratches. My best example would be when I was watching a very beautiful movie called 'I am Sam' (This was a fake/pirated DVD. Most of the discs I have are of this type). After about an 45 minutes watching the movie the player got stuck at one point and also hung. The remote/player controls were dead and all I could do was switch off the mains power and restart the player.

I tried to replay the same section but the player got stuck again. I was very disappointed. The good thing was my dad had just picked up Philips DVD625 for his office and it happened to be at home still in its packing. I unpacked the player and connected the same and thig player just sailed through the same section where my 570M was getting stuck/hung. There was not a hint of the disc going to skip. Cherio to 625.

The other sad thing about my player was that it was Region locked to '3'. I am just having this attended to from a Philips technician. The hack in available on the web but needs a Universal Remote control or a Philips Pronto to use the hack. I decided to have Philips do this for me and the player is right now at the service centre. Philips sent home a technician and he tried to remove the region coding with his Universal Remote (Kinyo AV9000S)/ as well as the players own remote but it did not work. I was asked my a senior Philips Service Head to have the player dropped at their service centre which I have done and am expecting it back today. Anyway; wish me luck.
