For the ininitiated, a forest safari holiday is very different from the usual hill station/beach holiday. Spotting and viewing animals in the wild, to me, was a completely new experience compared to what I was earlier used to: watching animals in the zoo or on chains.
The place is easily accesible by bus from Kochi (Cochin) or Madurai, although you can also take an expensive taxi. The best place to stay in terms of location is the Kerala tourism resorts inside the forest (all private ones are outside), although the service is not so good.
The early morning boat ride on the Periyar river is fantastic and we were lucky to see a herd of wild elephants cross the river just in front of our boat. While walking through the forest, we saw a chittal (spotted deer) from less than 6 ft. away watching us from behind a tree.
A great place for the nature and bird lover.
