I have been to PARIS twice and there are things I love and things I dont. I love the City but I dont enjoy the Parisians. I do speak Parisian French, (not French Canadian French), and every
time I asked a question in French everyone made me feel like a hick!
They ignored me so in this review I am going to get my revenge and ignore them! I love the Culture that embraces everyone who visits here.
There are 4o Musées in Paris but the Musée du Louvre is my favorite Musées, (Museums), here. I could spend a few days there looking at all of their collections. Imagine standing in front of the 1900 paintings of the Old Master Artists of the Worlds! I cant possible tell you about all of them but the ones that awed me were Leonardo Da Vincis Mona Lisa and Venus of Milo. The Statues of Bellin, Donatello, Maillol and Michelangelo were amazing.
There are tools from the Iron Age, Egyptian, Etrusans and Greek Art. I was stunned when our Guide told us that only 5% of the art is on display. I love the Impressionists Artists. We spent some time at the Musée de Orsay, (built in an old refurbished Train Station).
The collection includes Art Deco furniture, architecture, paintings and furniture. Shopping at the Department Stores and the small Boutiques near them is quite fun. The Department Stores are the Au Bon Marche, Galeries Lafayette, La Samaritaine and Au Printemps. I bought two perky hats at Galeries Lafayette, some make-up I had never seen at Au Printemps and a chic suit at a Shop near by. The Parisian Market a food market. It is also the place to pick up the designer labels for less than 10 dollars, (Canadian).
You can also find antiques, books, used cloths and birds. I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw my first birds for sale sign! One night we took a boat ride down the River Seine. When you look at the Sites you saw from land you get a different perspective of them. Another night we walked along the quays of the River.
There are many stalls that sell food, books and flowers. I love violets and my Husband bought be a little bouquet that had frilly lace paper around them. Le Nortre Dame is on the Ile de la Citéon, (an island), in the middle of the Seine. We also walked to see Sainte Chapelle a gothic styled Church.
We went to Montmartre one night to have dinner and see the artists who work there. We ended our evening at Pigalle to see a show at the famous Le Moulin Rouge. I can tell you the price of drinks at the Moulin Rouge cost a lot and the show was only half an hour.
! La Tour Eiffel I view it as an architecture Monument. We went to the top and saw it felt like all of Paris was spread out before us. Across a large square is Le Arc de Triophe was built in memory of Napoléon. It is the end of the Champs Elysées.
The Jewish Quarter, (called the Quatre), is in the Marais. We love to wander the streets and peek into the shops. We stopped in to see The Picasso and The Museum of Jewish Art and History. It is smaller than most Museums but it is very interesting. We saw a Kosher, (a food store that obeys the Jewish Laws of how to serve food), and had lunch.
Before we left the Area we just had to see The Musee Carnavalet that once was a mansion. The collection includes every part of life in Paris from the earlier days up until today. One morning we took a train to see the Versailles Palace. We toured the Sun-King Palace and the Jardins, (gardens), à la Française.
There are four bridges to take you from the Left Bank to the Right. The Left Bank is my favorite Quarter. It is filled with Cafes, little Shops and Artists. The best streets to see are the Boulevard Saint Germain des Prés, Saint Michel and Rue dUlm.
The Right Bank is where youll find the Place Vendôme, Rue de la Paix, Rue de Rivoli, Av Montaigne and the Champs Elysées.
The first time we were in Paris we went to see the show at the Lido, (I had seen women on stage nude but never men), that was the place to go at that time. The Lido is on the Champs Elysées and it was difficult to get a cab. While we were waiting I noticed that there were a lot of beautiful Women, (who were wearing designers cloths), walking up and down the street. I mentioned this to my Husband and he cracked up.
He explained these were ladies of the night who were working the street. Two shocks in one night...nude men...and prostitutes who were dressed better than me! The Latin Quarter we had lunch at the Café Flore. We went to see the Church of Saint Germain des Près and the churchyard to see Picassos head of a woman that is dedicated to the memory of the poet Apollinaire. We browse in the Bookstores, Art Galleries and Antique Shops. SOME THOUGHTS: Paris is divided into 20 `Arrondissement, (districts). Iti s impossible to visit them all. The Paris Tourisms Site is: http://www.paris-tourism.com Despite the people who made us feel like hicks we would go back to visit this charming City.
