Palace on Wheels is one of the most important tourist attractions of North India. It is a joint project of Govt. of India, RTDC (Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation) and the Indian Railways. It is a train that will make you wonder if you actually boarded a train or one of the many magnificent palaces of Rajasthan. It has a rich mixture of elegant interiors, great service with its coach attendants or ‘khidmatgars’ as they are called and an enjoyable and wide cuisine (and fare enough to make you forget your annual vacations for quite a while).

Palace on Wheels covers the three most important tourist destinations of India i.e. Agra, Delhi and Jaipur which are known as the ‘Golden Triangle’ (because of their popularity among the foreign tourist and their contribution to the net income of Indian Tourism) besides all the other beautiful cities of Rajasthan. The Journey on this Moving Palace is an 8 day affair. It starts every Wednesday from the Delhi Cantonment Railway Station and the rest of the journey goes as follows:

  1. Boarding from Delhi Cantonment

  2. Reaching Jaipur, also knows as the ‘Pink City’ because of its pink buildings. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and derives its name from its founder..Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. You are then taken on a guided tour of the city in an air-conditioned coach. Here you get to visit the Hawa Mehel, a beautifully carved 5 storey building, Amber Fort (from a certain point on the hill, you are taken till the fort on elephant back), City Palace (the royal family still resides in a portion of this palace, and it has a museum containing the treasures of Maharajas), Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort and then back to your moving palace. Lunch and Dinner are inclusive in the fare of the train and is arranged during the tour of the city.

  3. Two cities of Rajasthan are covered in the next day. Chitttogarh, with its awesome fort, which was conquered by Bappa Rawal from the Maurya Dynasty in the 8th century,is the first stop.

Udaipur, named after its founder Maharaja Uday Singh is the ‘City of Lakes’.Here, you are taken to the city’s two most breathtaking palaces, Jag Nivas and Jag Mandir, made of white marble and in the middle of lake Pichola. Then a visit to the City Palace and Garden of Maids of Honour completes the day’s tour.

  1. Sawai Madhopur is the next city in the treasure trove. It is also named after its founder Sawai Madho Singh. This city is known for Ranthambore National Park, which is one of the most famous wild life sanctuaries of India. It has more than 300 species of birds and many carnivores but most importantly. …Tigers (and you’ll have a whole day to enjoy their company).

  2. Jaisalmer, founded by Rawal Jaisal, is in the heart of the desert so you will be able to enjoy a good day of desert safari on camel back. You will also get to visit the beautifully carved palaces of yellow sandstone………Nathmalji ki haveli, Salim Singh ki haveli and Patwon ki haveli.

  3. Jodhpur, founded by Rao Jodha ,is surrounded by a high stonewall with seven gates. Here you will get to visit Mehrangarh Fort,Moti Mehel,Sheesh Mehel,Phool Mehel,Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana, each remarkable in its own way.

  4. This is the last day of the journey and it covers two cities.

First you arrive in Bharatpur, which has another famous bird sanctuary ……Keoladeo Ghana National Park, well known for its migratory birds and Siberian cranes. This is the last city of Rajasthan in your visit.

Next city, and the last in the itinerary, is the famous city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh.First you are taken to Fatehpur Sikri, built by the Moghul Emperor Akbar in gratitude for Salim Chisti , a famous Sufi Saint. It is on the outskirts of the Agra city. Then you get to visit Taj Mahal, the white marble monument of love and sorrow.

  1. Your journey ends on this 8th day from where it has started…Delhi Cantonment Station.

Palace on Wheels has 14 compartments with all the facilities of a five star hotel. The ticket fare depend on whether you want to take a whole compartment to yourself or if you share it with two or three people. It is charged in Us Dollars but can be paid in INR according to the current exchange rates. Fare for children under 12 is half .The time I have talked about was a few years back. The fare then was 370 US Dollars per person PER NIGHT.This was for the off-season, which is in India from April to September. The fare for the peak tourist season i.e. from October to March is slightly higher. It is all inclusive of meals, city tours, animal rides e.t.c.But the time I have talked about was a few years back so I am not sure if the fares have been revised.

Regarding clothing, the temperature inside the train is controlled according to your convenience. In winters, you will have to carry light woollens for your city tours. Summers in Rajasthan are extreme so carry clothing accordingly especially if you plan to roam the bazaars because it will be difficult for you to resist shopping. The place is filled with handicrafts and artefacts.

Though the fare of Palace on Wheels is not easy for everyone to afford, those who can, should not miss it for the world. It saves you a lot of hassle of seeing so many places on your own, arranging your own transportation and accommodation. An important thing to keep in mind is that the train is heavily booked for months in advance.

I hope my review is of help to those who are planning to enjoy this royal experience. Do let me know.
