Man I should have kept a more alluring title. Now you all know how I feel about the Album even before I have reviewed it. So, its a beautiful and different album. Beautiful because it creates beautiful
images in your mind and different because it perhaps is the only Hindi Album to feature OST of the music before release. Further, get ready to be shocked, there are only two tracks composed by Anu Malik whereas the rest are outsourced (yeah Umrika outsources to us and we to Pakistan lol) from a company called Music Mushrooms and these tracks obviously have music from Pakistani origin (how obvious) and hence, needless to say that the music score will be different. Further, drum beats, grand western orchestras or rock instruments make the music enjoyable and pleasure to listen to. Spiti for visuals and Paki Sufi Rock for audio with a mystic laden script should be an absolute blast of a combination. But before I go any further, let me tell you that the Album is made for the very best music systems only. The beats and orchestra is in a very very westernized style with hints of Chineese Opera. Hence, unless you get an absolutely good quality System, it may just never make an impact it should. Yes and dont think of Jism while listening to this one, since Jism was an altogether different high, there was innocent shrewdness about that, but this is more like grand isolation. Its got a unique charm of loneliness about itself, which adds to the mystic of the sound track. These are my first impressions and may change as the listening goes on.
INTEZAAR INTEZAAR: There is quite a long interlude before vocals start but somehow Anuradha Paudwal does do justice, its the tune and music itself which is exceptionally good to create a major impact. I like the way it starts with an Alaap and when the track changes to signature tune, its just pure bliss. You know there and then, that you will like this song, no matter what. Some of the sweep of the song and music is epoch like. In between, Anuradha Paudwal does convey a range of emotions. And haanji Khoobsurat se kuch gunaahon ka humein vi intezaar hai.... Man I just love those invitingly sinful lyrics. The song is composed by Anu Malik and he does a great job. Rating - 4.5/5
LAAGI TUMSE MAN KI LAGAN: Sung by Rahet Fateh Ali Khan, there is only one word to describe this song. Brilliant. The vocals are brilliant, not of the Nusrat type, but not less by much either. Further, the music itself is rustic and not electronic and that lends a certain charm to it even more. The table and harmonium composition can give any techno music a run for its money. Shahi composes the music for this one too and credit must be given for him to have stuck to roots of sufi music and not made it overtly techno. And its pure bliss when the notes touch a high scale, believe me its just sheer magic. Rating - 4.5/5
GARAJ BARAS: The song has been sung by Pakistani pop singer. Izmat Ahmed and is in a Junnon mould, not that you mind. A mix of Halla Gulla from Bombay and Sayonee from Junoon, the song has powerful Guitar and will hit it off with the young hip crowd instantly. (As much as I hate to admit but it captures the image of drugged youth dancing like crazy on streets of Manali so aptly, good song selection). Shahi is the composer of the song and he has done an absolutely wonderful job with this. Looks like the song comes at the real critical moment in Uditas passions. All in all I would say the song is cool but it may just about limit itself to a real youth or classy audience only. But yeah! I have already hit on the song. Play it on in the car, aerobics class or meditation class - you cant ask better than that for sure. It may just make the grade of chartbuster with airplay and repeated listening. Rating - 4/5
LAAL: This has been sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Farukh Fateh Ali Khan and is once again composed by Shahi who does a wonderful job again. And both of them have just sung like men possessed and create a most authentic capture of Passion on the audio medium. The music again has a huge Paki Rock Influence. And personally speaking, although a touch on the hippy side I quite like this better than the previous track. Its really more than an Alaap, its mesmerizing and its captivating, its just waiting to be heard to be liked. Rating- 5/5
Sun E Dil: Ever heard of a song in need of editing, then this is the one. Although not entirely a bad track, it comes at the wrong time in album when you have listened to breath taking Rahet and are in groove for action. The lyrics and singing saves the routine Hindi emotional rone-dhone wale film song. Its an interlude between complications of passion and forbidden. Some of the lyrics Sun e Mere Dil, Jeena Na Mushkil Bana ..... Dariya Mere Paas Hai, Taqdeer Mein Pyaas Hai ...... Phir yeh Kyun Paap Hai.... are quite good as well. The music is by Anu Malik and is again quite good. Its not bad even remotely, its just that other tracks keep such a high tempo, that it does not really keep up to that standard. Rating - 3.5/5
INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS: The first of instrumental tracks is Witness to a Murder, now you dont need IQ of even 1 to know when would this track be played in the movie. Nice track but well let it play in the movie. Its not bad actually on second listening. Shiven gets Shot, thats the second OST, and I am just guessing Shiven is John (what a cool name). This is a lot better, gripping and musical than previous one. Its just that at the last moments it gets stuck in a repeat mode of one tone and drags the whole piece down. Aaj ki Raat Kat Gayi To, yeah right, bach jayega and the heroine will do prarthna and seva of the hubby dear. What a bland music piece not helped by the bland title either. The best OST was Intezaar Interlude, Marvellous and Brilliant from the beginning. The only problem is that it ends before you can say - This is what I wanted you to listen. Apne Sa Kuch Dena Chahti, what a wierd wierd title, whatever it means. Apna photograph de do. Another down the drain OST. Apne Chahto Pe Kaboo, is the best of the lost probably because it is consistent and is musically complete without visuals as such. Dialogues end the piece and may give a clue about the theme of the movie. Hamesha Ke Liye Kuch Nahin starts on with such a magical voice, that you wish it was a full song, instead of just an OST. But its really listening worthy. Tumhari Jagah Onchey Aasman is the more traditional track in OSTs. But again it probably needed a base of visuals to make an impact. The orchestra as such do not make any great impact. Tasveer Kheecha To, is quite alright and looks more like the dance track of Titanic, its different though with what look like utensils. Its good musically too, and interesting as well. But again it ends before it starts. Zindapal is just about adequate, and is entirely passable. Kis Kis Ko Maro Ge is among the better OST scores in the album. Its atleast there by the time you can spot the name of the score. Its quite good musically too. Overall rating for OST Tracks - 3/5
Overall its a cool album with quite a variety of songs and the novelty factor alone should be a reason enough for purchase. But yes do listen it on a good quality system and the music will work wonders for you. Definitely makes the anxiety to watch it on the big screen strong and should be a contender at the year end awards. Though it is not as good as Jism it must be admitted, but still it does hold enough content to classify as a good buy and listening too.
