I have stayed more than two years at Delhi for work related requirements. And I have been to both the Kolkata Oxford Bookstore and the Delhi one. The Delhi Oxford is located at Connaught Place(previously it was placed at Barakhamba Road). Although I love Connaught Place a lot, my experience with Delhi Oxford Bookstore has not been a good one.
I was impressed with its collection of DVDs, pens, greeting cards, file bags, folders, tea and snacks to a great extent! But unfortunately, most of the popular books of renowned authors such as Paulo Coelho and Ruskin Bond were not present at the time I visited this store. More surprisingly, most of the books(which were available) appeared a bit old or say not in a good condition.
The Connaught Place Oxford covers an area of more than four thousand square feet, but I felt very little staff was actually present to cover this huge area. In addition, the staff was pretty impatient and rude. They didn’t allow me to stand and read a book for more than fifteen minutes. This obviously came as a shock to me. They defended themselves by saying if I stand and read for a long time, there is every chance of the book getting damaged(torn or old). I was not expecting this and I clearly felt that if potential customers were not allowed to read or spend reasonable time with a book, then how on earth they will be able to make a decision!
Finally, I noticed that classification of popular books here(based on their genre) were pretty absurd. For instance, I came across books written on medicine under the classics section. So, there’s every chance you will waste a lot of your precious time here. For all these reasons, I am not recommending this place to all those who simply love to read and buy books!
