Much was told to me about Orkut by many of my friends, with whom I have regular contacts through mail or phone. Well...why should I register in that site when I already have many other (safer and private) means of communicating with them was the impression that I got....Until I remembered that there was one girl who was a good friend of mine at school, who didn’t get in touch with me after few years of completion of schooling, (I didn’t take any concerted efforts either)  who once sent me a card saying’ you are one of the luckiest to get b’day wish from BBC-Bold, Beautiful and Charming...’.I wanted to know what this BBC girl was upto ....

My entry into Orkut

I started ’searching’ her through some of my other schoolmates, but coudn’t  gather even a pinch of information about her....she used to be hooked to the computer all the time, so for the sole purpose of finding her, I got into Orkut.....I was reluctant to give all my personal details in the profile which was almost like publicising my personal information to the whole world...as I was aware of many cases of information misuse by some miscreants...hence created a blunt profile with as minimum details as possible, with my proper maiden name alone (as I wanted to find a person who knows me well in that name..)

Nearly vain attempt

I usually go to the supermarket nearby,  to buy a can of milk, I notice some fresh veggies and end up buying them and  atleast 10 household items (forgetting to buy milk in the bargain!!)....Something similar happened here...some of my dear friends spotted me God knows how with the minimum info that I had disclosed, and sent a friend request and asked me (first requested, then ordered, eventually threatened) to update my profile and upload a picture......I replied to everyone (nearly 7-8 of them) saying I came here just to search someone and have no intentions of uploading picture / updating profile....

As we all know ’demands’ from friends can never be ignored, and although I didn’t update my profile, I just went ahead asking ’whats up?’, ’how hv you been’ stuff like most people do....but I restricted these ’scraps’ (which look like crap to me) to people with whom I don’t have any other means of communicating....

So Contagious

As I was lucky enough to find some of my schoolmates, curiosity to find some more of my ’lost’ friends was killing me...I tried to locate friends with the most unusual names first...Like an obedient slave, Orkut found so many of them....I had a sneak peak into their profiles to check if its the right person...and did I think I would be leaving footprints? No...but I did leave...and they got back saying ’why can’t you leave a message when you can come and have a look at the profile’......(what a shame)...............so my friends’ list became wider.....and wider....

What’s with the communities ?

Becoming a member of the community to which we belong (say school/college) enables us to find our counterparts easily..no doubt, accepted...but what is the voting system going on like who is the fattest teacher, who’s got the most creaky voice etc.,that too when the concerned teacher is very much there in Orkut and in the community...ex-students needn’t have any reasons to worry, but what about the people who claim to be currently studying under them? pray, which direction are we heading towards?? Looks like our minds are shrinking at a faster pace....

What do you call it? INNOCENCE or IGNORANCE

People who Orkut are those who have enough access to the internet and the same measure of access to what is happening in the world....They must be aware of how declarations of information like ’hey call me at this no.,........we’ll meet up at this time, this place, ..............and I wont be Orkutting because I have this kind of an itinerary for the following week, so miss me....’
Haven’t we had enough of evil effects?

Personally I feel, Orrkut can be used as a wonderful way to get back to someone with whom you lost touch some years back....It is indeed nice when you stumble into somebody’s profile and find out that you know that person, and would want to get back to him/her....
And if one has all the time in the world , he/she can swim into the ocean of Orkut and fish as many information and gossips as possible and enjoy a secret thrill, which I am sure many would be doing......it might be very tempting to parasites afterall...


And I am yet to find the person (BBC girl) for whose sake I created a profile in Orkut....and that is not the only reason for me to be associated with Orkut now....I would use that as a tool to get back with as many friends as possible....
