Well! Considering the fact that I work in the IT industry, which I guess most of the readers belong to, I would say that this book does reflect some of the "realities" youngsters face these days. But not
everything mentioned in the book may be applicable always. But just that some of us have been through some of the troubles that were published.
People in the IT (and the ITES/BPO) industry do face similar issues. Most people might think that the higher the pay package, the less burdened the work becomes. While others believe that people with higher salary have a lot to give in. I may not be the best person to judge this but my experience taught me that the more you spend time with your family, the easier your solution to the problems.
The ground realities that everyone face are more or less similar. It may look different with different professions. But its just that the level of pain/trouble that would be varying. And not all problems are so simple to tackle but a little bit of positive thinking wouldnt hurt anyone though. Who knows, it might just be the right way to finding the solution.
Well anyway, I bought this book because the book is cheap (as I said, IT makes stuff look cheap as most IT people get better salaries than a senior in a non-IT firm) and Ive heard a lot about the book.
The other reason was that there was a 15% discount. That made the book even cheaper.
I had already read Chetan Bhagats 3rd book (The 3 mistakes of my life). It was just a coincidence that I started reading his books in reverse order of chronology. I am a frequent traveller (on a train though) and I do prefer reading while on journey. Chetan Bhagats writing style is simple and intuitive. You would want to read the whole thing before putting the book down. But there are some drawbacks too. I sometimes feel like I know what to expect next. There are some areas where the story becomes predictable. And this book had the good thing that it was different though the story was made more "filmy" by including the romance section. I feel there were quite a number of "flaskback" chapters in this book that could have been avoided.
The book is a good buy if you dont have anything much to do except killing time.
Also, I believe I saw an episode in a channel some time back. Not sure if thats Star TV or Zee TV. But the episode had a similar story line that goes something like this....
Some people (around 5 or 6, i dont quite remember though) working in a same building get stuck in a lift. Each one is frustrated with their life having some problem. Suddenly the lift wires begin to snap and the people start panicking. I guess theres an onld man too in the lift who tries to calm them and gets them tell their problems. After that they all calm down and promise to change their life if they get out alive. Now only one wire is left and like a miracle they get help. They come out alive and their lives get better but none of them know who the old man was. Probably God himself...
I think it was aired in the early 2000s but not sure of the exact period though.
This may be a rip of that serial, or rather us the "professional" word "inspired" by that serial.
Anyway, not many people might have actually seen that episode and actually remember that.
But on a whole, the book is ok and I woud rate something between 5 & 6 on the scale of 10 just for the fact that I was able to kill the time. Actually I completed the book in around 3 hours while I was travelling. So this book may not be a "must read" material but it sure is one option to spend your time if you dont have much to do.
