Vishal Bharadwaj is the nemesis for all the Jeweler turned producers and the pseudo-intellectuals from the Parallel Cinema (how I hate the term) age.
He has proved with Omkara, how engrossing and appealing
(to both masses and classes) Classic cinema can be. The movie is not only a terse and contemporary rendition of Othello, but also is a launching pad for Saif into the league of "Potentially Great Actors".
I would skip the technical finesse bit about the movie and move straight to Saif Ali Khan. The greatest thing in life is not to be born great but to become great. Unlike Dilip Kumar or Amitabh Bachan who were naturally talented and captured the audiences’ imagination from the very beginning of their careers, Saif Ali Khan has been the proverbial Lambi-Race-Ka-Ghora. His depiction of the envious and ambitious Langra Tyagi leaves the viewer with images which linger for weeks. Lanra Tyagi’s human weaknesses and the evil which spurs him to action have been played to perfection by the young Nawab. I just hope that more directors offer him roles with scope of histrionics. Frankly, audiences have liked him more and more in all his movies since Dil Chahta Hai and with Omkara he just makes their faith in him stronger.
Ajay Devgan was good as usual, but Konkana Sen proved to be the perfect choice for the role of Langra Tyagi’s wife. She looked sensual in a deglamorised get up and did complete justice to the dialect and expressions of women from the Western UP belt. But now she would have to be careful in not accepting the kind of roles which brought an end to the careers of many desi-beauties before her. Does anyone remember Nandita Das?
The music and Lyrics might not be a chartbursting fair, but do complete justice to the story and its setting. Omkara-Omkara, the title song and Jigar Ma Bari Aag once again prove why Gulzar is the most creative word-smith whom Bollywood has ever produced.
Overall, Omkara is a collector’s movie, despite its fate at the box office.
