INTRODUCTION
When I was a young kid, I watched cricket matches at neighbor’s place or at a TV shop, until we bought our own in 1987. Obviously, the commercial breaks were minimal and the ads were either funny or straight to the fact. One commercial stood out. It was a foreign commercial. The commercial was “Old Spice”. It had the haunting music that mesmerizes you against a beautiful background of a surfer against high tidal waves. It ended with a lady clinging to the surfer, after he applies Old Spice. Two things registered in my thirsty mind. The great music from the ad and the product itself.
Now, fast forward to late nineties. I am in a nice job that I chose out of many offers I received and I have to be clean-shaven all the time. Though many find this to be a boring task, one needs to be nice looking. I remembered my childhood and I went for the product I adored so much as a child. As a corollary, I started my search for the music and found Carl Orff. I bought the product and the music from Carl Orff (O Fortuna from Carmina Burana) (I have attached the full lyrics and the meaning of this wonderful piece of music, in the comments section). Thanks to Old Spice I was smelling nice and listening to nice music.
After using Old Spice many times and as a person who can compare Old Spice against many products, I am tempted to write a review on the same. Let’s move on to the review.
OLD SPICE – The Product
Old Spice (https://oldspice.com) is a product offered by P&G, which is a giant. Old Spice Cologne is a liquid applicable to soothe the skin after-shave. It indeed has many chemicals in it and consists mainly of Ethanol/SD Alcohol, FD&C Blue, Fragrance/perfume(s), Benzophenone, Water, PEG-40, hydrogenated castor oil,SD Alcohol and D&C Violet # 2.
Old Spice was initially introduced as an after-shave and it has grown to a brand by itself. Now it offers 9 varieties of deodorants, anti-perspirants and body sprays, 3 varieties of colognes and after-shaves, 2 types of soaps and Noxzema variety of shaving products. All this tells you how big this brand has become. Old Spice is a phenomenon by itself.
OLD SPICE – An Analysis
My association with OS has been a long one. Though I tried other brands in the mean time, I feel OS has some sort of uniqueness that pulls you to it. The fragrance is somewhat of a puller. When you apply it to your skin, it soothes you so much that you forget all the pains of an effortful shaving experience. While you can say similar things about almost all the after-shaves, I am telling you OS indeed made me better for it penetrates the pores in the skin and gives you a relaxing feeling
I have always applied after shaves very sparingly. I mean I do not wash my face with it. It will be like a drop or two on rough surfaces. I feel it is good enough. I have seen people having a face wash in it and applying no other fragrances.
After applying OS, you can be assured that people who come near you will have a nicer feeling, any after-shave for that matter. I felt Brut, CK, Hugo Boss, Aspen, Givenchy, Jovan, Dolce & Cabbana, Axe, Armani ( I have tried them all), were nice but I felt OS was nicer for various reasons. It may be due to long affection for OS and the fragrance itself. As I like fragrance but can live without it (To me the nicest fragrance in the world is the smell you get after the first drip of monsoon rain falling on the sandy surface. Wow! Nothing can beat that!), I am thrilled by the fragrance but am not very keen on spending too much money on it. OS comes at a very nominal price and is nice when it comes to fragrance. At the same time, I have seen many OS haters also. They just cannot bear the smell. Like everything else, people are entitled to their opinion.
Let me give the ratings
Fragrance/Smell – 4 stars
Soothing effect – 4 stars
Value for Money – 4 stars
Happiness Factor (This you get after applying) – 4 stars
Brand value – 5 stars
Overall rating – 4 stars
Warning:
Some issues surrounding OS or any other after-shave. All the fragrance, lotions, creams and all have similar effect. As they enter your body through Inhalation, Skin, Orally and through eyes, you are prone to have Low order of acute toxicity (if it contains minute alcohol), transient alcohol intoxication through acute ingestion, transient irritation through eye contact. If you do ingestion on regular basis, you can have liver dysfunction and mental impairment.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION
OS, like its name suggests, is an old inspiration for me. It is also one of the oldest and first after-shaves introduced that is phenomenally popular. OS is a world leader and will remain so, for a long time to come. My association with OS has always been fruitful in many ways (It introduced me to Carl Orff and also increased my curiosity in Western Classical music in certain ways, as I love listening to nice and enchanting music).
Some people may find OS to be a little too over powering to smell. It may be irritating in certain ways. I have had similar feeling towards some of the fragrances. It is always nicer to wear something your loved ones likes. As the fragrance is kind of like Musculine, it may drive some of the women away.
Another thing to remember is that you cannot go on a 75-foot wave riding and surfing after applying this. This certainly wears down after sometime, which is nice. It will be smelling for a longer time only if you wash your face with it. Believe me, I have done it once (by mistake) and swore never to repeat the same mistake again
OS is a great after-shave for many reasons. Hence, I would always recommend OS to all.
