2005, a year with a lot of hope and change. That’s the year I joined Oakridge. Like everyone else, I started out as a very bashful 1st grader. New school and new faces scared me but that fear didn’t last very long as we practically grew up with each other into the beautiful unique individuals we are today. Remembering your high school is one thing and remembering the place that literally shaped the person you are today is another. This school has brought many things into my life. Apart from the glorious memories and hilarious classroom discussions that I shared with my class, I learned to be thoughtful, internationally aware, and overall, distinct and liberal.
IB, I guess can be described as a sweet burn. While it is a lot of work to do the IB and I’ve had several essays to draft, it does leave a lasting mark on you and your future endeavours. It becomes a part of your identity and you do end up relishing the skills you’ve comfortably(sometimes painfully) picked up which you wouldn’t have otherwise with another curriculum. IB, believe it or not, is always a great topic to bond over. All of us have a lot to say about it.
Shout out to my English teacher, Srilakshmi Ma’am. My 14-year-old self(clearly a presumptuous teenager with scathing judgements about the world) would have laughed at the idea of me enjoying literature as much as I did in my senior school. Unravelling the meaning of the text and listening to my teacher’s explanation was almost academically therapeutic. I think I enjoyed it rather too much that it was too peaceful to not fall asleep- just kidding.
I am thankful to have studied in a diverse learning environment. The different opinions and ideas that I was presented with at a young age shaped the way I think and what I advocate today as an adult. I learned early on in life that it is very important to reason and question every belief and that it is okay to not yield to the conventional dogmas of the society.
As an alumnus, I can say that Oakridge and IB are badges of honour and they are great with laying out opportunities for you should you choose to make use of them.
