Sprinkeling water by hand was common when we were using Desi cotton school dress. It was painful to make them smooth. Ironing needs 3 things, heat, weight and moisture. All eclectic iron has now good regulation on heat; weight is also not a problem. Moisture or water is required for smoothing the cotton clothes.
Steam iron works well for cotton clothes but there are problems.
1.There is continuous stream of steam and your cloth is always wet after ironing, this has overcome by new controlled stem irons.
2.It needs soft water to prevent formation of crust of Calcium carbonate, very common in bore well water.
3.Using soft water the iron get rusted and red crust comes out.
4.Filling water in iron is pain.
5.Holes in the undersurface make it rough surface and not smooth to iron.
6.New good quality cotton and semi synthetic clothes don’t need any moisture for ironing.
Ultimately after using everybody switch off the steam or bye an age old but good quality moderate weight; heat regulated smooth inexpensive electric iron.
