Nilgiri’s Super market is a historic building on Brigade Road and now a multistoried landmark with many branches and orders from overseas. It seems to be tucked inside the road, seemingly feeling conscious about its location. NILGIRI'S IS a bustling supermarket spread over some four levels, including a bakery, a supermarket, a café, and the offices. It's invariably teeming with all kinds of people; the old Bangalorean hunting for the particular brand of mango chutney available at only this supermarket, the expat stocking up on spreads and jams, the harried mothers carefully leaving instructions for children's cake inscriptions at the bakery and love struck couples killing hours at the cafe. Even outside the softy has spawned a generation of faithful followers. There used to be a time only few super markets were available to visit and shop and Nilgiri’s was a great spot! It boasted to supply everything from Confectionaries to milk and butter, ready-to-serve food.
With many food worlds and fab malls, Nilgiri’s soon lost its sheen simply because the management did not think of expanding or marketing the super market! Afterall they had a bunch of loyal customers who visited them every Sunday morning for their weekly ration of goods and bread.
Competition made Nilgiri’s a lesser known center. The customer service deteriorated when the mall assistants(mostly young girls) chatted away to glory in tamil, oblivious to the customers. This gave an impression that management is interested in employing only tamil speaking girls and women as assistants. In one instance, I actually walked out of the store when they were rude with our family member.
They would come out with flying colors if they shift location or opened branches in residential colonies, and orient themselves to become more customer –friendly.
I would love to mention that no one can beat the Nilgiri’s pasteries and cakes, baked fresh and served in the basement of the super market.
