New - UthHeaven Music Review

When S.J.Surya announced that his next venture will be a home production titled New starring himself and music directed by A.R.Rahman many fans began to rejoice simply due to the fact that his earlier movies were musical super hits. So the expectation grew sky high but the delay in the production and the late audio release dampened the spirits but finally the audio released. Is it in the same league of Kushi and Vaali. Will it be a super duper hit. Will it raise the movie’s fortunes at the box office. For the answers read on.

New starts with the title track New sung by Vijay Yesudass, supported by Blazee and chorus. The track is full of surprises. The biggest being the lyrics by Vaali. He has used the names of the late Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R. super hits. All the titles are used very intelligently and beautifully but the same cannot be said of the tune. It starts off promisingly but falters in the stanzas but picks up after repeated hearings. Up next is Sarkarai sung by S.P.B. and Sujatha. This song will be a hit with masses thanks to the easy lyrics and catchy rhythm but nothing great about it but the next song could be a deciding factor for the success of this audio.

The next song is a brilliant remix of Thottal Poo Malarum a super hit M.G..R. song but the tune is different only the lyrics are used again. Stunning vocals by Hariharan and Harini. The big challenge this song faces is the fact that the original tune was a stunner by all means, will it over reach the masses. Only time will tell but excellent bgm and vocals.

Moving on we have soothing ballad from A.R.Rahman - Unni Krishnan combination. It’s been quiet a while since they gave us something to sing along and this song with ok lyrics praising mothers and womanhood can be a super hit but the lyrics are nowhere in the league of Amma Endru Azhaikatha from Mannan that is due to the fact that the lyrics shift over in the second stanza to a different meaning and sung by Sadhana Sargam. Unni wins hands down in the vocal department. If U wanna comes next sung by Chinmayi, Anupama and Aparna. Lyrics are very average but the beats are great. Look out for the middle piece. Stunning beats resembling Rishi Rich’s bgm’s but sounds original and cool.

A track titled Spiderman sung by Kunal and Sadhana Sargam is next but this one is really tricky. You hate it at the first time but slowly you begin to like it a bit and once the movie releases this track could be a hit. Lyrics by Vairamuthu and the next song Kumbakonam sung by Nithyasree and Manicka Vinayagam. Great combination but tune and lyrics disappoint. Not up to Rahman standards. So we have 7 songs and Thottal Poo Malarum gets a much deserved repeat but how are they.

The songs have been tuned keeping the story in mind and S.J.Surya has to do a good job in picturising them. Why so, well all the songs wont be blockbusters and only 3songs have the potential to do so and if they are picturised well then the audio sales will pickup. Rahman has done a decent job but not a great one like Ayutha Ezuthu in which he seemed invincible. Here in New he has thrown in shades of magic but if we see the overall package New disappoints a bit.
