Not the most shocking thriller of the year!

Director duo Abbas-Mustaan's latest flick falls short of expectations, especially because it was being publicised as the "most shocking thriller of the year". When you see such a caption for a movie directed by the masters of thrillers made in the hindi film industry, it is natural that your expectations will soar high. Unfortunately, "Naqaab" works in portions. I'm not saying that the movie does not have any shock-value. It does have it but Abbas-Mustaan have made better thrillers in the past. If you are hoping to watch a movie like "Humraaz" (directed by the same director-duo and starring the same actors Bobby Deol and Akshaye Khanna in lead roles), you will be thoroughly disappointed.

The plot revolves around Sophia (Urvashi Sharma) who is engaged to multi-millionaire Karan (played by Bobby Deol for the nth time!). They are supposed to tie the knot soon. Enters Vicky (Akshaye Khanna). Sophia starts getting attracted towards Vicky and vice-versa. But wait...there is more to this triangular love-story. Revealing the plot furthermore will take away the pleasure of watching "Naqaab - disguised intentions". Ofcourse, you will get to see some twists and turns in the second half. You might get shocked and at the same time, you may find it dumb.

The first half of "Naqaab" does drag but it somehow manages to hold your attention because of Akshaye's performance. After a short first-half, the second half picks up (especially after the murder) and Bobby (who is relegated to the back seat in the first half) makes his presence felt. However, both of them were better in "Humraaz" (which was also a far better film). Urvashi Sharma does a fine job and takes full advantage of the opportunity. She doesn't come up with an impeccable performance but her flaws are hidden because of her confidence. She is here to stay and is the best debutante this year so far. Vishal Malhotra and Vikas Kalantri ham throughout the movie. The music by Pritam is in sync with the mood of the movie but if compared to his other compositions, the tracks here are disappointing (hopefully, he hasn't lifted any tunes this time). "Ek din" is the pick of the lot.

"Baazigar" remains Abbas-Mustaan's best work so far. They have never been able to achieve that standard in any other movie so far (except in "Humraaz"). Calling it the "most shocking thriller of the year" is an overstatement. Another thriller made this year, "Raqeeb" (a dud) was equally shocking. At the box-office, "Naqaab" should do well but will face a huge competition from the hollywood release of the week - "Harry Potter and the order of phoenix" and biggies like "Chak de India", "Partner", "Cash" which will be releasing in the coming weeks. My verdict - "a bit above average". My rating - 2.5 out of 5.
