THE NEWS!!! This one is a winner!!Gerald Durrel hence fourth known as Gerry is moving to Corfu with his family. The book was intended to be a mildly nostalgic account and nature journal of the five year sojourn to the beautiful island but as Gerry puts it, he made the grave mistake of introducing his family into the story where they
proceeded to take over from there fourthThis story brims with love, between the madcap family members, the overabundant number of pets and between Gerry and the nature around him. youll be pleasantly suprise that by the end of this book, not only will you be throughly entertained but have learned a decent amount of knowlege concerning animals as well.
Everything in this book is washed and aglow with the sunshine of Corfu and you will split your sides with Gerrys account of his family, Larry, his eldest obnoxious writer brother, Leslie, the rumbunctious gun toting second brother and Margo, the teenage sister with the typical teen girl angst of looks, acne, clothes and love.
Theres also Spiro, the cab driver who has it against people who act like they own the island, wildly ignoring the fact that he acts like he owns the island. Spiro the loud guardian angel of the Durrell family who helped them find the assortment of villas
with a bathroom thank you very much. Spiro who also stole goldfish from the palace for Gerry.
And of course theres mother, slightly unsure of herself but a gem to the core. As Gerry puts it, shes a credit to them all.
This is a well written masterpiece and you have admit that animals are more interesting that we make them out to be as Gerry reminiscance about his pets, a tortoise called Achilles with a perchent for strawberry and human comfort. A pigeon named Quasimodo who loved music and could dance to a walzt and the march. his dogs.. (especially the disgustingly named puppies, puke and widdle). He had snakes, a gull, an owl, fishes of all sorts.
I garuntee by the time you finish this book you will come away with a suprising knowledge of animals and nature, lovingly explained and introduced to you from the eyes of a child.
This book is a journey through a magical childhood that you cannot help but wish you could experience firsthand. I dare anyone to read the book and tell me that they didnt like it.
