The opening credit starts with the song "POP goes my heart" sung by the band POP.Alex Fletcher(Hugh Grant) is an 80s pop star from the band which is now broken up.After POPs
success, bandmember Colin leaves for his own solo career which becomes a huge hit.Colin goes on to get his own perfume launched while Alex becomes an 80s has-been.Alex doesnt seem to bother that his own solo albums been declared a flop.He still makes his living as a star by performing his POP hits in amusement parks & for reunions. He looks at his life in a good-humoured way with his manager Chris(Brad Garrett).Reigning pop queen Cora(Haley Bennett) makes an offer to Alex which he cant refuse-to perform a concert with her at Madison Square. The only catch is that he must write a new song on the title Way Back into Love within a weeks time.Alex is a little week on the lyrical side cause its been ten years since hes written lyrics.Sophie Fisher(Drew Barrymore) is a lady who waters Alexs plants & she tends to be gifted with poetic words.Soon Alex & Sophie team up to write the lyrics for the song. While doing so,they also open up about their lives to each other & Alex finds out that Sophie suffers from her own problems.Alex asks her to confront her issues while Sophie teaches him the importance of having good lyrics in a song.Alex is a very musical guy who focusses on the melody in a song since he feels its the melody that captures everyones attention. But according to Sophie,as one gets to know the melody better the only thing that keeps the song going is the lyrics. She compares melody to physical attraction & sex & lyrics to the heart & emotions of a person. After one sees the physical stuff, then the only thing that keeps love going are the feeling that a man & woman share. This is the underlying basis of the movie.Alex is the music & Sophie is the lyrics.Later on,when the time comes to show Cora the finished product,Cora is all praise for the duo & she fixes a time when they can record the song. But Alex & Sophie get horrified when they see Cora doing exotic dances with a huff & puff" of orgasms to their romantic number.Cora believes in Buddhism & she also believes in doing exotic dances with skimpy clothes to Indian music that portray her spiritual side.Sophie wants to tell Cora that shes damaging two musical cultures at a time. But Alex informs Sophie that everythings fair in money & the music world.Sophie is disgusted that hes prepared to allow anyone to ruin his art for the sake of money. What follows is a tale of music, lyrics & sweet love.Hugh Grant is perfect as Alex Fletcher & his sarcastic comments bring a smile to ones face.Drew Barrymore seems comfortable in her role as a sweet & quirky woman. This is a popcorn movie,no doubt. But Im a sucker for romantic comedies & I know many people out there also appreciate the so called popcorn movies.Hey!Only these sort of movies manage to keep me smiling.
