I wonder why people are so crazy about the Mountain Dew ads. First of all, I need to confess that I havent seen the ads broadcast in the US. However, in India, I would say the credit for the popularity
of this drink should really go to the Sprite ad-makers. Though the first ad of the Dew was a hatke type, but I wasnt able to comprehend whether that was a cola drink or an apple juice ad. Though later I realised that it was that of a cola, I was surprised at the impact the ad had made. When I saw the ad again, I realised it had really created a new genre of ad-making. Gone are the days when a Lalithaji comes over to depict a middle class woman. The ads made now raise the expectations and aid people dream the impossible. Thats what the Dew ad has made. Thats it.
When I look in the perspective, I feel that the Sprite ad has made a world of good for the Dew creators. The Sprite ad fails in promoting its drink but tries to mock at the competitor which has backfired. People remember the Dew more because of I wanna Do from the Sprite ad than its own making.
At least now, the ad makers should be careful when mocking at the rivals. In the thankless world of marketing and advertising, these blunders are quite unforgivable. Lets hope to see some constructive adverstising hence-forth.
