This novel is about banking operations, the financial system and corporate ‘hera pheri’ that goes on.

     The book begins with
the news that Ben Rosseli, the chairman of a major bank is on the verge of death. After his death, who will become the chairman of the bank? There are two contenders for this post- Alex and Roscoe. Roscoe is what we call a ‘practical’ kind of guy. His ideology is to make profit at any cost, by bending laws and even at the cost of social obligations. Alex is a more straightforward kind of guy but in no way a perfect person. Who will win the race?

Another sub plot is that a large amount of money has been stolen from the bank. All eyes point to Junita Nunez, a bank employee. Has she stolen the money?

Between the story, the various characters indulge in long discussions about economics. You’d love these if you are interested in economics. If you are not interested in economics, these will be a big bore for you.

This book is highly entertaining. Even though the book is close to 500 pages, seldom do you feel that the plot is dragging. The climax also has a good suspense- you are kept guessing as to whether the good guys would win or the bad ones ( After all, this is no Hardy boys or Enid Blyton).

The only flaw in this book (If you want to call it a flaw) is that many a times you can foresee future events as the author keeps dropping hints about them.

Anyone interested in finance/banking cannot afford to miss this book. Its amazing that most of the things said about banking/financial system are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago when the book was first published. However, if words like ‘gold standard’, ‘Keynes’, ‘bonds’ are alien to you, your enjoyment of the book would be limited.
