When Gouranga Chakraborty arrived in Bollywood from Calcutta he had nothing going for him.Absolutely nothing.They said his looks were all wrong.He had just won the national award for best actor (Mrigaya[1976]) and that made him too arty. He spoke hindi with a north calcutta accent.For years no heroine except Ranjita was willing to pair with him.But our dada is a great fighter.He struggled and he tried.Some success came with Suraksha(1979) where he played a bond-like character.In the meanwhile he had changed his name first to Rana Rej then to Mithun.Nobody doubted his acting abilities.It was just that there was no place for him in Bollywood.He had always been a good dancer,a rare thing for a gold medallist at FTII,Pune.In Taqdeer Ka Badsha(1982) he had a dancing role.But real success came with Disco Dancer(1983).It was nothing short of a miracle.Mithun danced and the nation danced with him.He sang and India joined in the chorus.It was essentially a small film by B.Subhash.But,dear reader,it was no mean achievement.He was no star son,had no godfather,he was not handsome in a conventional way and please don’t be angry he was a bengali boy  and a brilliant actor.It is difficult for a person who is ruled by these factors to become a bollywood hero.But Mithun proved everyone wrong. He proved that if you work hard enough anything possible.His success in the next seven years has to seen in the light of the fact that no one else from Calcutta has even dared to try what he achieved.Such was his boldness,his cheek. Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra  and Mithun Chakraborty were the three top stars of the eighties.His career graph became somewhat different thereafter but he is still around and seeking good roles.I think its important for everyone to know that Mithun is a great philanthropist.He has adopted a baby girl who was found near a garbage heap in Calcutta.Mithun has proved his mettle for everyone to see.Its our turn to emulate him several times over.
