I'm not really a great fan of Koli hotels, because I've suffered major disappointment with every Koli hotel I've ever tried. I love Koli food, but NOT from Koli hotels. However, my family just gets lucky and they pretty much enjoy Koli food anywhere and everywhere. And what can I say, I'm an adventurist :P so when I told my mum about this new place, yeah well, we just HAD TO try it. Since, I've passed by that lane a lot of times, the place did kinda intrigue me. So we finally went for a dinner on the 15th of July and here's what I think. Mi Hai Koli, in their name itself claim to be authentic. Might I say, it's more than a claim. The place screams AUTHENTIC, in bold letters. Starting with the ambiance; they've got this little bamboo baskets used by fishermen to work as bulb brackets. And the ceiling has this thatched bamboo mat like thing running along the length. There's all sorts of Koli music playing in the background and the crockery! Oh my!

The crockery too stays pretty true to the Koli culture and adds a very interesting look. The low lighting puts in just the perfect amount of comfort level you need to dive into what's gonna follow. We started we Jumbo prawns fry and Masala papad for appetisers, followed by a surmai thali and a bombil thali. I got full at the Jumbo prawns fry itself. The prawns were heaven and nothing else. That perfect golden brown crusty crispiness on the outside gave way to such tender juicy flesh, such heavenly taste of prawns I've found only in Goa! The burst of the flavours from the juicy tender flesh of the prawns to the hot spicy crispy outer coating of rawa is just plain amazing.

It is a MUST TRY for anyone who sets foot in that place. Masala Papad is how a masala papad should be. The thali is perfect and your typical koli thali. Comprising of a fish curry, chapati/bhakari, rice, fried fish, solkadi and pickle and onions. The bombil fry is yet another great story. Use your spoon to have the fried fish cos it's too hot and tender. Just how bombil should be. It is something you just can't get enough of. Another must try. The surmai thali is just as tasty and they're pretty generous with the size of that fish! I loved their solkadi. Not to spicy not too bland. Just perfect to even out all the carnival of flavours you've been having in your palate.

The service is great too. When we arrived we had to wait for like five minutes, before finally getting a table. But in that waiting period, they took our order for the entire course, so by the time we were seated our order was already arriving (course by course, obviously). The speed did surprise us considering how everything we ordered was so fresh! The attendant is good. He's like super enthusiastic and his energy is kinda amusing and kinda infectious! And he'll give you some pretty honest reviews on what to order. Be careful and know your menu right though. The guy is quite a seller! The staff is very efficient. They don't need being told twice. It's like you just look at them they'll know what you want.

On the downside, space is a major problem. They can't seat more than say twenty people, so you either make early reservations or you wait. Also, their menu is pretty limited, though whatever is there will never disappoint. It still leaves you wishing for more. Don't have too many expectations from desserts. They only have gulab jamun there!

Pocketwise, they are very very easy on the budget than almost all sea-food hotels in Thane. In spite of the fact that this place offers a far better food experience. The most expensive thing there is stuffed pomfret which is for 450. Which I still think is very reasonable. Dinner for two comes in the range of 500 to 700. But if you ask me, it is worth every penny. Mi Hai koli offers you the complete authentic and amazing Koli experience. Which for me, is a very big deal considering my previous track record with other hotels.

All in all, I think if you're looking for some nice sea food treat in and around Thane, without burning any black-holes in your pocket, Mi Hai Koli is one hell of a place to try! :D
