I had visited Matheran around 2010. Experience was awesome. But, come in 2016, The experience is little different Issues:
Getting your own car at the Matheran parking spot is not enjoyable task. The taxi service from Neral to Matheran taxi-stand are bunch of rough drivers and do not respect private vehicles, if you take your car up till taxi stand. The road is narrow, lots of curves and steep along with this rough Omni drivers as taxi service.
Parking spot at Matheran is not maintained. It is just some space in between the woods. In weekends or rush days, you hardly get any parking spots. In order to encourage tourism, government should atleast plan a good parking spots instead of this Chaos.
Good that no vehicle is allowed in Matheran as we get fresh air and get to experience raw nature. Having said that it should have been easier to navigate. There are hell lot horse riders and private services to get you to one place from other. They have least respect for commoners who want to walk and enjoy the nature. Though it was not bad experience. Controlling on the number of service providers would keep a balance. 4. The local people are good. They you with directions when ever you want. The business people are all different sort of people. They are arrogant, but local group of people and they just want to have business. 5. Staying at Matheran is too costly compared to other hill stations in Maharashtra. In peak duration, average room costs around 5000/- a night which is hyped. Maybe, if you book earlier you might get a better rate. Try the rooms which is government owned but well in advance. We didn't book any room, and had planned a single day trip.
Carry a cash Local vendors do not take your cards or payTM. There is nothing much to be seen. Charlotte Lake is good to visit. There are few points neraby, like Echo Point which you can cover in one direction. Rest all the points are all same. Just enjoy the walk in the woods. Hope we didn't have many horse riders spoling the fun. Walk from taxi stand to MGRoad is also fun. Walking along the track of toy train. The toy train is not operational as of now. Hope they bring this attraction back. Matheran has the potential to become a great experience for tourism. We need better people to manage.
All the things is good but it can be better.
