There are not many places near Mumbai for short weekend trips.
But Matheran is the place where we have gone several times and know that will go again and again.
How to go?
We take the train to Karjat and from there take the toy train which takes us upto the hill. From there, we usually walk to our hotel. However, horrses can be hired if some of is lazy to take the pleasant want or old.
Where to stay?
We usualy stay with Lord's in one of their villa overlooking the lovely hills. They have swimming pool, badminton and TT which makes it perfect for my son and us.
Its a hotel run my a parsi family. The buffet is typically parsi fare or continental, both of which we love. There are may other hotels too at different prices.
What to do?
There are several points which are best visited by walk. There is a lake which is soothing and have a calming effect on us. There are plenty of horse which can be hired for Rs. 400 or so for several hours. The sunrise and sunset are views to behold!
There is a small local market where one can buy local fare.
When to go. The places is closed during moonsoon(April to Sept). Best is to go in Dec-Jan when the chill in the air makes it an experience to relish.
