I have visited Matheran a few times just to take a break from the busy life schedule we have on normal days.
It is a good place to hangout with friends or even as a couple.specially nice if you visit it during the winter season as the climate is very cool.
Its nothing much different from other locations where you see scenic beauty.but since it is nearby Mumbai you can drive to the place or even use local transport.
The best part is that after a certain point there are no vehicles allowed and so only transport medium is by foot or on a horse.
Few pointers that any one needs to keep in mind is that you need to have a good bargaining skill if you are going unplanned and thinking of booking a hotel going there itself.and even for the horse rides the strong your bargaining skills the better rate you will get.
