Hello friends,
If I say that the last few years have been very patriotic for the FILMIWALAS then I won’t be wrong. BHAGAT SINGH (who can forget 3 BHAGAT SINGHS releasing at the same time) set
the new trend. And it’s been followed till date, the best example be recent release MANGAL PANDEY-the rising. Lets see how far the director and the actors in the movie were able to do justice with the subject.
STARCAST: -
· Aamir Khan
· Toby
· Rani Mukherjee
· Amisha Patel
· Kiran Kher
And many more
STORY IN NUTSHELL: -
During the revolt of 1857, there was a minor character, MANGAL PANDEY, which played the vital role in reminding the British that INDIANS are in no way less than them. One HINDUSTANI is equal to 100 of GORAYS was made to realize to the FIRANGI’s.
May be there wasn’t much information available about the character therefore director brought another angle which deals with the friendship of MANGAL with an Englishman. Meanwhile there is this KOTHEWALI, Rani Mukherjee, (HEERA), who is in love with MANGAL. MANGAL’s FIRANGI friend saves the life of a lady who was to be buried with her husband’s dead body (SATI PRATHA). Now FIRANGI is in love with that girl and the whole village is upset and angry. Keep that aside because this is till here only afterwards the village tends to forget about the whole incident all of a sudden as they come to know that the new bullets that have arrived contain PIG and COW fat. What after that………go and watch this movie, if you don’t understand then you can read 10th class history book and you’ll come to know.
PERFORMANCES: -
· AAMIR KHAN
He’s one of the finest actors INDIAN film industry ever had. And this movie is no exception of his acting skills. If I say that anything in the movie that will be remembered is AAMIR KHAN’S acting then I won’t be wrong. Who can doubt his acting abilities. People were wondering how would he look in his new attire and once again everyone is left dumb with his looks and acting.
One feels as if MANGAL has come to life looking at him. His dialogue delivery is the finest and refined, he knows what the director wants from him. His sense makes him look genuine. The plastic appeal of any actor takes the back-seat when the actor gets deep down in the character and that is what AAMIR has done in this movie. He’s not AAMIR on the screen but MANGAL and one can feel the heart beat of MANGAL in AAMIR. Hope he’ll keep the standard.
· RANI MUKHERJEE
Since the movie was centered around MANGAL PANDEY there wasn’t much for any other character. Even then one could see that HEERA comes out as a winner. But winner of what. She’s a court dancer, and then all of a sudden she is sitting on a horse and fighting. Amazing, it can happen only in BOLLWOOD. The man is trying to sell her and the next moment she’s dancing and singing. And what a dance and song, no doubt KAVITHA tried her level best to make the song sound as a mujhra but MAARDALA can’t be created again and again. And likewise, RANI can’t become REKHA OR MADHURI or the mesmerizing MEENA KUMARI of PAKEEZAH. Better luck next time
· AMISHA PATEL: -
I would like to advise AMISHA to at least read the script and ask director about her part in the movie before signing the movie. I guess even guest appearances have some potentialities but in her case she was entrusted with the role (JWALA) where her talent has not been tapped. Guess director must have thought to increase the star value and therefore he approached her. Whatever, there was a huge controversy about AISH leaving the movie and she was supposed to play the part of AMISHA- THE SATI. Thank GOD she left the movie otherwise I don’t know how she would have faced the critics. Even AMISHA, after giving fabulous performances in the movies like GADAR, KAHO NA PYAR HAI and ELAAN, your fans expect you to take the assignments that can exploit your talent completely.
There was nothing for AMISHA in this movie, to say there was nothing for anyone in this movie as the movie was completely based on MANGAL PANDEY and it was sure as told by critics beforehand that all other characters will get shadowed by him.
· TOBY: -
Playing the part of FIRANGI (with lame HINDI) he tried to play his part to the point of perfection but even actors have some boundaries. First of all he’s outsider who don’t have much idea how TINSEL town works and on that the director had few details about his character. Though his character was the only part that has some substance but again the director wanted just AAMIR and may be who knows if it was AAMIR who asked director to do that, anyway now he’s also an international star (after LAGAAN).
Whatever it may be, a director like KETAN MEHTA should have done justice to his role. At least he should have gone and consulted the historians before coming out with the idea of directing a movie on such a subject. Another talented actor gone for waste in the movie.
· KIRAN KHER
Don’t know why she gave her consent to play this role. Her deep cut blouses created no excitement among the viewers. And the people like me who consider her among the talented actresses were, kind of, ashamed. After playing substantial roles in movies like HUM TUM, MAIN HOON NA, KHAMOSH PAANI and her unforgettable performance in DEVDAS. She is an actress with a style.
Would like to appeal her that please don’t go for such roles which are under your esteem.
MUSIC: -
When we look at the music score of this movie then one finds that the background score and MANGAL PANDEY- the title track are the only music pieces in this movie worth listening. The title track repeated three times actually awakes you when you are asleep due to slow movement of the movie. And the MUJHRA is pathetic, TUMHARI ADAO PE MAIN leaves you still not because you liked it but because you try to find out why the song was needed in the movie. Almost all the songs, seem to be unconditional and unwanted in the movie. A R REHMAN gave the worst music of his life in this movie and even though if he’s able to beg the FILMFARE AWARD, then I think the people are intelligent enough to understand the politics involved in award distribution. Who can forget, ISMAIL DARBAR loosing FILMFARE award to REHMAN 2 times and that too when DARBAR really deserved the award. Anyway, lets not fall into any argument and analyze the music. In simple words the music forces you to think rationally on the pathetic score delivered by so called maestro.
Lyrics are without any meaning and except the title track, I don’t think if director has anything to be proud at. At times simple words are made immortal due to fabulous music but here neither the music nor lyrics are of any use.
The controversy: -
Movie took quite a long time in the making. And lots of things were heard during its making. And who can forget PRINCE CHARLES coming and giving the inaugural take for the movie.
Later we had AISHWARYA controversy wherein she was heard saying that she was ready to work in the movie but till the last moment she wasn’t given the script and one fine day she was asked to come for the MAHURAT as PRINCE CHARLES came to India. And now after the release one can easily understand that why AISH wasn’t given the script. I would just say whatever happens, happens for our own good and thankfully AISH took the right decision not to work in the movie at the right time.
WHAT DO I SAY?
A movie based on unorganized and twisted facts. Hope next time director will take time (though it is said that director took 10 years time in this case) in positive way!!!!!!!!!1
