I saw Mangal Pandey just the other day. So, to write about the story in detail would not be of any use as I can see that there are already 107 revus on the film in MS.
Now that Aamir has been
part of two biopics I cannot help but compare the two movies. Apart from the fact that these two are period films starring Aamir and having Rehman as the music director there seems to be nothing in common between them. The dissimilarity starts right from the characters that Aamir essays in the two films. Lagaan’s Bhuvan was an honest and upright man who was free of all vices and treated everyone as equal and thus his fight for justice rang of genuineness. But Mangal’s sudden transformation from a man, who visits brothels, is a drunkard, gambler and a casteist to a martyr is not convincing in the least.
Even the leading ladies of The Rising have been given a raw deal. Where Gracy Singh had a prominent character in Lagaan, Rani and Amisha have been wasted in two-bit roles in The Rising.
Amitabh as the narrator held our attention. Om Puri fails in this respect as the sutradhar of Rising. Music was the lifeline of Lagaan with every song etched in our memory but apart from ‘Mangal Mangal’ (which has become a national craze) the rest of the songs is eminently forgettable.
Finally, the men behind the movies are also poles apart. Ashutosh Gowarikar had his hand on the audience pulse. He had the entire nation rooting for Bhuvan and his men but Ketan Mehta fails to evoke patriotic feeling in his audience.
Sorry, Ketan! you had promised a time bomb but have delivered a dud.
