Regrettably, this review has resulted from my limited understanding of Mallika Sherawat as an actress from three-and-a-half viewings (Khwahish, Murder, the Myth and half of Bachke Rehna)
Honestly,
how can anyone actually live through the complete trauma of Bachke Rehna?
Reema Lamba, rechristened as Mallika Sherawat, was supposedly born in a conservative family. She has guts, I’ll give her that. To have defied a society is no child’s play. I’ll up her ratings on the guts also with the intimate scenes that she’s done, especially in Murder. I wouldn’t rate Murder far from a softporn flick. By Bollwood standards, with a passionate public like those in India, to have allowed Emraan Hashmi to eat her out with a camera and crew filming takes guts.
Meet Tom, Dick and Harry – three works of fiction who represent the difference of opinions that I voice on sex-Sherawat. Tom’s a serious film critic, Dick’s the voice that approaches her as a woman, and Harry’s the analyst who voices his opinion on public attude, and hers. I asked each of them what they think of Sex Sherawat – their replies were:
Tom:I’ve just seen the Myth and it was horrible! She really can’t act to save her own life, it’s damn evident she uses bare skin to overcome flaws in her acting. Her expressions are half-good, and her movements are usually sultry rather than seducing. She commands when she speaks but her lips and tongue are usually occupied with the smooches, so she hardly gets to mouth any dialogues. Maybe some better roles will do her good, I hope she learns to act soon enough – with a body like that and the hype she creates, she can be the box-office queen to reign.
Dick:At first appearance, her torso reminded me of a three-course dinner … where do I start from? Unfortunately, you can’t say the same of her face, thought she can’t be blamed entirely for that. She enjoys the look she carries and that about sums it up. She was born to stun men and she can very effectively. While treading on the thin line between vulgarity and seduction, she would do well to develop elegance as a woman and transform herself from a sex-kitten to a diva!
Harry:She’s bold – a lot of that boldness reflects in her actions, her outbursts, her speech and her looks. She’s an achiever – a liver of the moment, very happening, full of energy. I honestly think the media and public have used her both constructively and destructively - constructively as a symbol of female dominance, destructively as a violator of social concerns. She has potential without direction, proved by signing films like Bachke Rehna, etc. She would do well to steer her ship of cleavage-display well away from the hostile waters of social values. The skin and bod she has, the entertainment bit needs a bit of attention.
She’s not the best of actresses, but who says she can’t learn? Getting into Bollywood with skin-show is easy, but staying in is what is tough. Honestly? Mallika can carry it off, if she finds some acting skills soon enough.
My personal take on her – is simple: you can either approach her as a sex-symbol that loves to do nothing but strip half-naked and smooch Emraan Hashmis, or you can approach her as a bold woman who has attitude to believe in herself, executes her wishes and lives with no self regret, in spite of evoking controversies from smooching to skin show.
I prefer the latter. Being negative won’t get me anywhere. Never has, never will. As a performer - nothing. Not the best of dancers either. As a woman - hot, happening, a body to die for. As a person? Good positive attitude, rich in self belief, but maybe a bit too much of head-weight. Cant confirm, dont know her personally (unfortunately!)
