It is not often that one comes across something that is insightful and at the same time not pedantic. And this is what makes Malgudi Days special to me.The master story teller in
this book avails us with a collection of short stories that are characterised by his easy insight into simple human relations, child psyche ,humour and gentle irony. I suggest that one rather should not go through this for any grave or critical purposes, though I do not deny the fact that every author in his work gives vent to his feelings and comments over the contemporary society and state, rather he cannot help it.But what gives you pleasure reading this is its simple and easy way of narrating the stories that are surprisingly refreshing and enjoyable though they are about simple and very ordinary country people and their commonplace problems and wishes , things that in films we often find nagging.By the way R.K.N. craftily uses the flashback technique in these stories that gives you a feeling of watching a fast and engaging film without any fuss.Another information about it is , Malgudi is an unreal place its name probably being derived from two real places Mysore and Lalgudi,a small railway station that provoked R,K.N.s imagination.Nevertheless ,it does not at all fail to give you an authentic taste of South India. After all the din and bustle of your active or pseudo-active(pardon) life you can really find this book a source of REFRESHMENT OR SOME KIND OF A SLEEPING PILL WITHOUT HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS.This book I recommend to anybody belonging to any age.
