hey ppl

this is PARt 2 of my review.

The Magic of Malgudi is an omnibus, edited by S.Krishnan.
It includes three of narayan’s stories.those being Swami and friends, The Bachelor
of Arts and The vendor of sweets.
Incidently, Krishnan has chosen these three stories of narayan keeping his life story in mind. when narayan wrote these stories, they were an analogy of his life, ie they represent the three stages of his life, his childhood, his adolescense and his adulthood.

Swami and Friends is a story well loved by almost everyone. This book basically goes into the details of swami’s childhood and his friendship with Rajam and Mani. these three were inseperable. Also it is interesting to note that this was india in the british raj and so the seeds of revolution were already sown. its really amusing and at once poignant to see swami and his classmates reactions to a riot which takes place outside his school, protesting about the british raj.
But most of all the ambience that narayan creates is so fluid and idyllic, that one is swept away without having any knowledge of it.
Then The bachelor of Arts is about Chandran who is confused baout as to what his true purpose in life is. we are swept along with him on his journeys of self-revelation with fascination. Its really amazing how the human mind can absorb emotions and translate them into something else. the whole story is about Chandran finding out wheather he is in love with the lady whom he professes to love or not. ultimately he realises that what he wanted was right there, under his nose. but he had to go through all this before he found out what he really wanted.

the third story is really fascinating . its about Jagan and his son Mali.
It shows the struggle between the generations, ie the generation gap that exists between paernts and children. Havent u ever observed , u always tend to get along with ur grandparents more than ur parents and vice versa?:)
thsi story shows us that ultimately parents have to allow their children to make their own mistakes in order to grow.

hope u liked me review. all comments good or bad are welcome.:)
