Makdee ke ghar me koi nahi jaaye, makdee ke ghar me bhoot ke saaye….

Roj taaza lahu sunghati hai, roz lomadi si ghoomati hai,

Khidaki se lipate hue saayeme, aasu ko bo aayein,

Makdee ke raundhe baahe………….

What a start to describe about the main character in the movie – makdee. Can anyone think other than the above words to describe about a witch? Don’t know, from where the heck, Gulzar, the maestro, brings so meaningful & beautiful yet simple words.

The next sequence to watch out and hear out for is the Kallu Qasai’s song –

Lambe lambe baal tere chikane rehate hai, bina tel kanghi ke bhi chikane rehate hai,

Tu khaaye ja mutalli meri, jo khaaye tu ho tasalli meri…khaaye tu wajan badhe mera……hai na….zinda to rehana hai behana……

Khaaye tu wajan badhe mera – what a thought again….lyrics are not only about good & meaningful words but also about the new thoughts you bring up. Who has thought that a butcher or qasai will say this to his hen that if you eat, I will gain weight?(More you eat, stronger your muscles will be & hence, I will get more money in selling you and in the end I’ll gain some weight…so eat……….wow………truly brilliant Gulzar saab!)

Vishal uses the voice of the knife that the butcher uses to start this very song & it is so innovative to hear.

It won’t be an exaggerating statement if I would say that this film is full of creativity.

The name Mughal-E-Azam and Alladin, the witch hitting the skull with the bones to disappear an entity is actually a door to the tehkhana where people are digging for months to find an ancient murty & this is the very reason for their disappearance, , etc.

*Being a children’s movie, this is movie also needs to be seen for the innocence.

*Innocent Chunni asks the witch if she can offer toffees instead of the chickens to complete the deal of freeing Munni. Mughal-E-Azam innocently supports Chunni when she asks him for 100 chickens. He offers his ice-candy to his beloved pet Alladin & cries out his heart when he sees Alladin going in the witch’s house. Chunni, in order to save the truth, burning mid-night oil & studying & then crying in the memories of her mother.

The song in the memories of the mother – dar lagata hai mai… can be compared with “main kabhi batalata nahi” from TZP. It has the same emotions. Only the case that 1st is not known to many due to low budget & profile of the film & the director.

Cinematography is another area to watch out the film for. Look out the use of the sun rays in the witch’s house while she is walking. The camera, in so many scenes is placed at an amazing angle, that it is fun to watch it. For ex. Qasai listening for the voices of the people under ground. The beauty of the village is also captured very well throughout the film.

Acting wise– all superb performances. The kid Shweta can teach a lot of the stars in the bollywood on how to act. Her performance truly deserved an award which she bagged as well at that time. Makarand is also good with expressions & has shown his positives & negatives of his character easily. Look out dialog delivery by Shweta to Mughal-E-Azam in the start when she says – “use betta nahi, naukar chaahiye, jo usaka buchadkhaana ghista rahe”.

The only pain in the movie is why Shabana opted for this very role as she has very little to do in this film which she has done with ease. May be she liked the script. Kudos to the makeup man though, for making her really look like a witch.

*This is what probably, the Indian directors should learn from Vishal that making public appearances, cheap publicity stunts, making unnecessary hypes or boasting unnecessarily in the interviews or just involving the big names in a film, showcasing Switzerland or UK doesn’t make a film watchable or classic but a strong script & a movie made not only with heart but also brains can make it a success. This movie may not be a huge box office success(& this is the biggest pain of mine) but make a serious movie-goers like me to say proudly that this is a bollywood movie.

This is what even I like about these two maestros – Gulzar saab & Vishal. These two maintain so low profile & yet are so powerful guys to shiver you with their films & their any creativity like lyrics or music.

This movie remains as one of the classic movies for me which I can watch at any time for the sheer brilliance of the direction, strong script, performances, direction, music, lyrics, canvass of the film, cinematography & the strongest message.*

Vishal, Gulzar saab – you just keep on doing whatever you are doing, there are fans of you like me who will always cherish for you.
