The film ’Maine Pyar Kiya’ was made under the banner Rajshri Films.Directed by debutant Sooraj Barjatiya it was set to music by Raam-Laxman.
The film starts in a small-town.Suman has just
passed her intermediate exam. But her father must go abroad to earn the money necessary for a good life.So Suman is left with a friend’s family. The friend is a big industrialist with humble beginnings. His wife still remembers Suman’s father while he does not.The friend has a son called Prem who has returned from abroad after higher studies.
Prem and Suman meet.Like nice kids they are initially allowed to be only ’friends’ initially. They do the mandatory song-singing about friendship.Suman is Prem’s date when the two attend a birthday party.Circumstances make them realise their great love for each other.Soon they are singing more songs about their love. This includes a birthday-suit song for birthday boy Prem.
Prem’s father is convinced by evil men that Suman’s father has evil designs on his son.He throws Suman out when her father returns. Now it is the turn of Prem to convince Suman’s Dad.Evil types get their act going and there is a lot of dhishum-dhishum with a pigeon show.Poor Mohnish Behl gets beaten up as always. However alls well that ends well.
The cast includes Salman Khan,Bhagyashree,Alok Nath and Reema Lagoo. There are some great songs lifted from phoren hits.My favorite is ’Mere Rang Mein’ and the title track. The film marked the beginning of the era of the ’Great Bharatiya Film’ .
MPK won a number of Filmfare trophies. There was the award for the best film and best male playback singing. There was also the award for best music direction.Bhagyashree was decorated as best female newcomer. In 1989,there was stiff competition from Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ’’Parinda’’.At the awards ceremony SP Balasubramanium enthralled the audience with his rendition of ’’Dil Deewana’’ while receiving his trophy.
