Flaunt the Pink Attitude: Mahindra SYM Flyte

I've bought a Mahindra Sym Flyte only last month, and hence am afraid that this review would veer more towards being a buying guide, than long term ownership experience which most of you guys will be looking for. Nevertheless, here goes nothing.

This vehicle was bought for my fiancée & this was the buying decision making process,

1.     Go to the showroom's for each of my shortlisted vehicles,

2.     Take a test ride.

3.     Read a ton of reviews

4.     Ultimately (and this is the most important), let the person who will be doing the majority of riding decide on their own. J

We decided on a Flyte primarily because of the following reasons

1.    Honda Activa had month long waiting lists & was arnd 20% pricier on road (at 53K inclusive of accessories which we were getting bundled with Flyte), in addition it’s a little on the heavier side for a lady to handle.

2.    TVS’s scooty pep seemed to be underpowered (at a 90 cc engine) & was quite wobbly at speeds exceeding 40 km/hr.

3.    Suzuki Access 125 & Hero Honda pleasure again had a month long waiting list & were around 10-15% pricier when compared to Flyte.

4.    We did not consider Bajaj Wave and krystal, since my previous experience with them wasn’t good (service issues)

5.    Kinetic Flyte was ergonomically suited for ladies, had a decent fuel economy, front refueling, large storage space, good acceleration & handling.

Ownership Experience is as follows:

1.    Fuel Economy: For a nation obsessed with fuel economy, this had to come first. Till now I have been getting around 36 kmpl in the city. The vehicle hasn’t been serviced till now, and I think mileage would go up by about 10-20% after 3rd service. My driving style is careful, especially since the vehicle is in the run-in period I rarely exceed 50 kmph, however all traveling is done within the city, which is bound to drag down the FE.

2.    Handling & Performance:  I am quite pleased with it; turning at speeds isn’t a problem and the engine hasn’t sounded any jarring notes (so far). However there is a slight lag of about 0.5 secs from the time you twist the throttle to when the speed increases. Since this occurs only at speeds exceeding 20 km/hr & is hardly noticeable to most people (some claim I am making the issue up totally :D) it should not be much of an issue. The motor purrs sweetly even at speeds exceeding 60 km/hr & can be coaxed upto 84 km/hr easily (with a pillion rider). Handling is steady even at high speeds. Ground clearance is v.v. poor though, if you ride with a pillion rider be prepared to scrape the top of speed bumps quite frequently & heavily (disclaimer: how hard you hit will also depends on yours and your pillion rider’s weight :P).

3.    Looks: Sleek & contemporary, however I would have loved it if Mahindra adopted the Honda Activa’s metal body. In it’s absence, metal guards would help, otherwise in the case of a collision, without any protection, you can expect the flyte’s headlights to go immediately to pieces: D. This is a girl’s vehicle through and through, with colors to match & contours to have a ‘pink’ attitude.

4.    Features: The front refueling comes in handy, however it’s at an awkward angle and the petrol pump attendant always has to twist the pipe a lot to get to it (some of them get quite grumpy about that, so hostile looks may be in your future every time you roll up to get a fill). A major problem issue is with the tank display (more on that a little later). The front headlights are nice and bright (I guess), but the mirrors are adjustable only the bottom, which makes them safe in the case of a collision but very difficult to adjust. Another issue I have faced is that the footrests for the pillion rider are set quite far to the front and they tend to hit the backside of your calves when you are moving slowly with one foot down on the ground, ruins the trousers & your balance along with it J. Storage space is more than ample & the two hooks provided on the front also help to carry groceries or whatever else may catch your fancy at the supermarket.

The fuel tank is pretty small at 4.5 L & is split into two parts, a main tank of 2.5 liters and a top tank of 2.2 liters. Now the fuel gauge works only for the main tank, so when the fuel from top tank is being used, the needle remains fixed at full. In effect the way it would work is, you would buy 200 bucks of fuel & for the first 100 kms the fuel gauge would refuse to budge from the full mark, and then it would start to fall very steeply and unexpectedly (over the next 40 kms, it will go from F to E). This also, is an avoidable issue which should’ve been dealt with by the manufacturer.

Verdict: A good buy, even with the niggles I mentioned above.
