About women in India

Story:

I bought this book after it was recommended by a friend. I have read a couple of Sudha Murthy's books and found her writing style to be simple and straightforward, better to bring out the irony of things.

This one is a story of a beautiful, spirited, ambitious woman who wants to become a theatre actor. She sacrifices everything to marry the man she falls in love with. Only to find that life is not a bed of roses, for a woman in India, more so if she is poor.

But she picks herself up, and moves ahead in life. It ends positively, but the overall tone of the book is of pain - personally don't like to read so much pain.
