Book Title: Mahashweta Author- Mrs Sudha MurtyThis book is a breezy 150 page story told in the most unassuming yet gripping and past paced manner. Ms Sudha weaves this remarkable story of a woman whose life is marred by this condition called Leukoderma.

One doesn't have to look too far to reflect upon his own prejudices against people with white patches and the misconceptions that are rife about them. And when this lovely protagonist meets such fate one would expect it to be a sorrow filled story.

The book is just the opposite. It is presented in a style where it presents different viewpoints and passes no judgments. It touches the soul of the reader leaving his eyes glazed.

  1. The story begins in a small town where a rich doctor falls for the charms of a vivacious, pretty yet poor girl. The hero of the story is the perfect guy and one can’t help envying his life and admiring his morals at the same time.

The female protagonist, about whom the story essential is, is winsome, lovable and has all that it takes to steal one’s heart. The two meet and marry.

Thus goes the story but the real tale is of a woman’s misfortunes, societies biases, life’s unfairness and the fortitude of an optimist to overcome all odds is what the story essentially about.

It touches one’s heart often, never meandering or losing pace. Days, weeks, months and years pass by in space of a few pages to capture those epochal moments of the life of the protagonist.

The characters of the main leads have been etched so well that one can almost see them wince, smile and scowl. The gravity of the most defining moments in the story is well kept and they create the impact that they should.

The most cherished humane values portrayed would melt the harshest of hearts, it surely did mine. The one page epilogue confirms the feeling that one ends up having by the end of it all.

2.It took me under two days to finish it and one would do well to invest two days to get in touch with his sensitive side beyond the mad rush of modern life and grow over stereotyped prejudices and above all read a well written story.

I almost wish, it weren't a story and I could meet the people involved.
