As a lower-middle class kid in Worli I used to see the rich boys and girls reading MAD.Later when,I came to Calcutta,I found the fortunate people reading this cult magazine.Imagine my great pleasure
when I found that this institution among publications was actually available on the stands.Indeed at Rs 35/- a copy, its more than a steal. Its a windfall. Why is this magazine so very effective.
For one,its a storehouse of ideas. There are original concepts floating all through the magazine each time you open it.And these ideas surely provide fodder for pure, wholesome entertainment. As always Alfred P Neumann is on the cover dressed in clothes that set you thinking about the rest of the magazine. The reader letters are hilarious and the photographs that come along often inspire awe. There is generally a cover story in illustrated form.In fact the whole mag is in comic-book form. There is usually a second important story at the back. The back cover folds to yield something interesting.
The rest of the mag is full of gags. There is the spy vs spy jokes. There are spoofs of some common life situations, some epitaphs that are usually bizarre. Some strange products are mentioned. There is a running story about two African-American boys whose name I dont seem to remember. All in all the magazine is full of insights.A lot of thought appears to go into each and every detail. What is more exciting is that literary contributions are welcome. The art is generally amazing while the content is awesome.Dont ever miss this one!
