Irving Stone's biographical novel ''Lust for Life'' is my most favourite book. There are three things that makes it a great literary creation. First, the subject - a life of an artist, who himself lives life to the leese. Van Gogh's lust for life is a subject matter for a great masterpiece. Second, the theme of the novel - how life and love are two inseparable elements integrated into a composite whole, and the writers massage of how love should be.
What I feel is that, there is hardly any other exulted moment in the realm of literature like the one in this novel where Van Gogh cuts his ear and sends it to his 'beloved' prostitute. Third, the treatment of these two factors by the novelist- his style. Irving Stone's language and imagery are very lively and it makes the climax situations lively. It will always remain a masterpiece for me. Whenever I get into discussion on love, I bring in the issue of Vincent Van Gogh and ''Lust For Life''.
A must read in life!
