The thing with Lufthansa is that you know what you will get. Nothing more and nothing less. And it gets you from point A to B on time and with your luggage. In terms of service, they may lack the latest frills and may not fawn over you but they are competent, functional, efficient and polite.

Check in at Madrid was good. Got the asile seat I wanted on both legs. Agent friendly. Boarding on time. I can not really comment on the Madrid-Frankfurt leg as I was fast asleep and the crew did not wake me up, which is great (lessons for Sq).

The flight from Frankfurt-Delhi was an B-747-400 which seemed very clean and well-kept. Seats were normal and leg room was a tolerable. You dont get much leg space in economy these days but atleast in lufthansa the pitch is tolerable unlike some other long haul airlines.

The meal service was fine. Portions were a bit small but its good to keep light on the plane. Food choices were veg and non-veg which were fine for economy and the Indian veg meal was well-cooked and of good quality. Large choice of bevarages. And the congac or baileys after the meal was a nice touch.

In-between services, choclates and other nibbles along with drinks available in the galley. Cabin crew were pleasent, efficient and fairly attentive. They are not going to go out of their way like Sq but they were always polite, and responded to call-bells.

Some even made the effort to chat with passengers and they were exceptionally attentive to some of the elderly passengers travelling.

In-flight entertainment was a bit weak. No PTV’s in economy which is a bit dissapointing. None the less overhead screens were showing two movies.

A snack was served consisting of a warm patty which was quite nice if not a bit small again.

Flight was dead on time and luggage came out swiftly with Lufthansa ground staff in Delhi ready to assit.

Overall, Lufthansa provides a reliable, consistent and competent service that is reasonabaly pleasant. Hence, I would pay the slight upcharge versus some other airlines and fly with them atleast to Europe. Of-course in Asia, Emirates, SQ, Malaysian and Cathay offer better service. But westwards to Europe really they are the best along with Virgin Atlantic.
