Lufthansa in German means Flying Bird. Luft in German means in air, or flying high, and Hansa means bird. Actually, Hansa is a Sanskrit word, meaning Swan. It is not an ordinary bird. Swan is the carrier of Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning. Max Muller was a great Sanskrit Scholar. Even today, in many German Universities, the standard of research in Sanskrit is very high. When the German Sanskrit Scholars speak Sanskrit, they do so with correct pronunciation.

Now to Lufthansa, the Airline, which is the flag carrier of Germany. Its home base is in Frankfurt, which is my favourite German city. I have visited Frankfurt many times to buy, repair or exchange German Cameras like Exakta, Leica and Practica. Once I flew Lufthansa from Paris to Frankfurt. It was in 1970, when I was having my briefing at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, before moving to Indonesia, my country of assignment. It was a brief flight, but quite memorable. The plane takes of, maintains the necessary altitude and then lands, and the time is off. Even for such a brief flight, we were treated with Orange Juice, hot breakfast and Coffee. The Hostesses were very meticulous, always ready to take care of the passengers. There is a saying in India, that the Swan easily separates milk from water. It drinks milk and water remains. It loves to swim in pairs, and they look really romantic. Similarly, Lufthansa separates the state-of-the-art matters from the ordinary ones, giving the passengers the quality service for which they remember Lufthansa like I do.
