If youve ever read anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, you understand the power of his writing. This book ranks among the greatest love stories of the twentieth century thanks to that same brilliance.
Within twenty pages you will be totally enchanted by the blossoming love of the two characters. Throughout the novel, Marquez shows that love is not simply for the young, and describes that the grip that true love can have on a man can last a lifetime. Honestly, Im a twenty one year old male and I hate love stories, but this is really a special piece of literature.
While the book does become repetitive at times, it manages to span two entire lifetimes in a enjoyeable and often surprising fashion. Marquezs use of fantasy realism has always been legendary, and keeps the sometimes sad plot fun and moving.
In the summer I decided to read as much of Gabriel Garcia Marquezs work as possible, and while One Hundred Years of Solitude remains the most touching and daring novels Ive ever read, Love in the Time of Cholera placed a clear second. For males, the book gives us a love story which is told from a refreshingly male perspective, and doesnt allow the main characters love of sex villanize him at all. For females, the male leads undying devotion to his first love will blow you off your feet in the same way that Romeo and Juliet first did.
