The first thing I did, after deciding to buy a two wheeler, was to seek the opinion from a few friends and other known people. I asked them what to buy. That did not really help, but left me with more confusion - because I received all the possible combinations of advise. But that gave me enough of useful material to think about.

Buying a two wheeler? Motor bike or scooter?

My wife initially wanted a motor bike (Hero Honda / Yamaha) But I wanted to buy a scooter.

The advantages of Motor bike, we thought are: It has style and riding that will be more fun. It is good for single or couple. But not very comfortable if you have a kid, not as suitable as a scooter for carrying luggage and more expensive

After a lot of thinking, we finally decided for a scooter since it is more of a family vehicle and that is more useful for us than a bike.

What Brand ?

There are two major brands in this category: LML Vespa and Bajaj. We decided that we will go for LML rather than Bajaj , because we both felt that LML has better looks than any model of Bajaj.

A few people who used both brands told me that LML is safer to drive than Bajaj because of its better balance. Bajaj models have the spare tyre at the back of the seat as a backrest while LML models have the spare type on the side where the footrest for the pillion rider is. This design, they say, balances the weight of the engine on the other side of the scooter and this brings better balance to the vehicle.

Which Model?

With this basic decision taken, we went to a dealer's show room and saw that there are two models - NV and Select II. The showroom guys were nice to us. The sales guy told us that primary difference between the two is the milage. He said Select II would give more milage than NV. Select II is more expensive than NV. I had to believe him cause I had no other input on that. Those were the days I was not really thinking twice about money, because I just changed into a job which was paying about 4 times my earlier job. I quickly bought Select II and drove it home with my wife sitting on the back. It was a great experience as we were not expecting to drive the vehicle the same day.

Truly, this vehicle of mine never let me down. I have been using this for over 4 years and 6 months now. I never gave me any serious problem. It has a good pick up compared to other scooters. It gives me milage as mentioned by them, ~45 kmpl. I always liked its looks. I never found problems locating service support.

I am absolutely happy with this scooter of mine, though I do not know if NV would also have been equally good. I think this is good for middle class people who want a scooter with good looks.
