Kyun! Ho Gaya Na (KHGN) is a misguided attempt, which relies too heavily on the off-screen chemistry between its lead stars. KHGN had all the ingredients of a blockbuster ? good promotion, good music, and immense popularity of its stars -, but the critics and the public gave it a NO NO on the first day itself.

Samir Karnik would have never imagined that his plan to cash on the hype surrounding the romance between his lead stars would backfire so badly! Yes, the rationale behind its flop status is quite simply the lack of chemistry between Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi. The audience went in to get sizzled, but came out thoroughly fizzled.

Dia vs Arjun ? Dosti Se Pyar Ka Safar

Dia (Aishwarya Rai) is beautiful, graceful, smart, kind, friendly, independent, and charming. In effect, she is a flawless angel, who believes that a marriage can be successful only if you first fall in love. Her parents had a flourishing love marriage, which only strengthens her belief.

Polar opposite is the lazy, adventurous and vivacious Arjun. His philosophy? ?Pyar Aur Har Arjun Ke Dictonary Me Nahin Hai?; meaning, ?Love and Defeat are not present in Arjun?s dictionary?. His parents and grandparents had successful arranged marriages, which contributes to his thinking.

Dia stays in Arjun?s house while preparing for an exam, during which they become close friends. Soon, this friendship transforms into love in Dia?s heart. Arjun, who is against falling in love, cannot accept the possibility of falling in love with her. It takes a clichéd third guy (Sunil Shetty) and an irritating Uncle Charlie (Amitabh Bachchan) to open his eyes, and they live happily ever after. Like duh!!!!!

Analysis of the Plot:

The problem with KHGN?s script is its wafer-thin premise. There was no need for Samir Karnik to stretch the ?love marriage versus arranged marriage? argument unnecessarily. Arjun?s parents could have picked Diya for Arjun, which he would have accepted; Diya, in turn, was in love with Arjun. Hence, both their conditions are met and they could have gotten married! Why extend the plot never endingly until it gives us migraines?! How long do we see the lead stars pulling the same jokes over each other!!!!

That saying, I must add that the scenes featuring Diya, Arjun and his family are well-shot. No dramatic dialogues or unrealistic situations. The friendship between Diya and Arjun is nicely brought out, and I can imagine myself being accepted into my father?s friend?s house and having fun with their son in a similar manner.

The Lead Players:

Aishwarya Rai: Her Beauty Overshadows Her Performance Yet Again

I never expect anything new from Ash Rai and she never disappoints me.

· I know that she is gorgeous ? and angelic she looks.

· I know that she is a very good dancer ? and NO NO only strengthened my belief.

· I also know that her range of expressions is extremely limited ? and she proves my theory once again!

Rai looks ill at ease in the light-hearted moments, and, after nearly a decade of cinematic experience, her dialogue delivery in the emotional scenes should be much better.

The problem with Ash Rai is that she hasn?t learnt to relax when she acts. A fun-loving and intelligent character like Dia doesn?t need to experiment with hairstyles; doesn?t need to wear the best of clothing brands. Portraying such a character requires spontaneity and natural warmth.

Why, o, why does Ash have to be perfectly groomed all the time???? She needs to realize that there is a difference between Nandini in HDDCS and Dia in KHGN. Nandini required beautiful clothes and flawless makeup to accentuate her character. Dia needs expressiveness, a bubbly attitude, and a relaxed performance.

Making people smile is a part of Dia?s character. It should look easy, because, with Dia, smiling is easy. However, Ash tries very hard and flounders. She is too classy for a down-to-earth Dia, and fails to capture our attention. Transforming a sensitive and human Dia into a bland mannequin, she extricates Dia of her soul. Ash should learn to differentiate between her characters and lend appropriate expressions.

Vivek Oberoi: He is back in form after a long time

Vivek impressed me with his happy-go-lucky performance as Arjun. Whenever VO and Rai share the screen he overshadows her with a comfortable flair for comedy, which was amiss in his previous attempts such as Masti.

While he is also good at the emotional scenes, his funny scenes make more impact because the film drags too much post-interval. He does portray the part of a jealous lover, when he sees Shetty and Rai cozying together, well. His sudden change-of-feelings towards Dia is corny; hence, Oberoi too looks muddled towards the climax, which, by the way, is horrible! However, one particular scene that stands out is when he defends the physically challenged kid.

On the whole, Oberoi impresses in the first half (watch out for his scenes with his parents), but is passable in the second half. An inconsistent performance, but better than his heroine?s nonetheless!

Sneak Peek at the Supporting Characters:

I urge Amitabh Bachchan to be more careful while choosing roles before his fans are completely annoyed. It is unfathomable as to why such a legend should pick irritating, itzy-bitzy characters like Uncle Charlie. Half the time he pops a blue gum and screams his throat off; other times he masterminds a supposedly ?brilliant? plan to unite Dia and Arjun using a third guy?.!!! The ?Come on, Charlie? or some crap like that doesn?t help either!!!!!

Om Puri and Rati Agnihotri, as Arjun?s parents, do a commendable job. How does Rati grow younger every day?!!!!! Sunil Shetty as Ishaan has nothing to do, and looks completely lost. Tinu Anand is wasted.

The Fizzled Sizzle ? Chemistry between Rai and Oberoi

Huge expectations lead to disappointments. Never has this saying been more true!

KHGN was practically promoted on the pedestal of the Ash-VO romance ? sadly, this pedestal is made of straws and crumbles effortlessly!

Ash and Oberoi have NOTHING in common. Firstly, Ash looks like a royal princess, while Oberoi has a boy-next-door look. Have the kingly and the normal ever gelled? I doubt it! Ash?s regal features and rich fashion sense stand out as a sore thumb beside Vivek?s mediocre features and casual dressing style. Moreover, Ash looks mature while Oberoi?s naughty twinkle and infectious grin make him look cute and young.

Secondly, Oberoi is a natural performer, while Ash is more practiced. For two performers to form a good couple, it is mandatory to follow similar acting techniques and complement each other in their dialogues delivery skills. This couple looks very odd, and the fact that Ash looks older doesn?t help either!!!!!

Remember Ash and Salman gazing at each other when she feeds him sugar in HDDCS? Now, THAT?s chemistry. Sadly, the ideal couple broke up and two mismatched performers are going out! Sigh! I guess, opposites attract in real life, but, sorry, they repel in reel-life.
