Pasar Malam A popular pastime in Kuala Lumpur and most of Malaysia as well as many parts of Asia Pacific is the night market. They are held in different areas of the city on different days. Thus, in our area, it was Saturday. People go in large numbers, as family, as couples or alone to stroll through the stalls, eat snacks or a meal, buy household needs or some trinket.
DVDs, Denim, Dumplings There will always be many stalls selling the famous pirated DVDs. We have them in India also but, here, the quality is very bad whereas you can get very high quality ones there. But it is a risk unless the seller is a regular at that market for the DVD may be bad quality. Another thing is that porno DVDs are sold openly. Interestingly, Malaysia is not a place where women will feel unsafe and, thus, it seems that porno and bad behaviour of males have little in common.
At these markets you can find a lot of fashion clothes. Again, we find such displays in India too but, except that there were no ethnic Indian garments(Indian clothes are sold in the expensive part of town at a very high cost), the China made garments are really cool. Unfortunately, you have to bargain and I’m no good at that. There are a whole lot of under garments too, of amazing diversity and design. Along with all the costume jewelery sold in such markets, it makes this phenomenon a must for lady visitors.
Eat Some Edible products from fruit and vegetables to snacks and pastries are all available. The fruit and vegetables are mostly sold by the farmers themselves. Dried meats dangle enticingly. Steamboat stalls make a killing with the crowds milling around them.
Footwear is also sold and is also much better than I have seen in India. Add optic wear, glasses, dark glasses and watches and clocks and small gadgets.
Most of the time, one can just go there to browse or socialise as you may bump into neighbours and relatives. However, often, one ends up buying a whole lot and so it is necessary to have a small cart handy if you plan to walk home.
Festive There is music blaring and, what with all the fancy displays, you feel as if you are in some Fete. Dress casually.
Tourist Tips I would really recommend that tourists visit one of these markets. One is sure to find some small items which will be excellent as gifts or mementos.
