What started off as an inspiring and fascinating tale of an underdog has now transformed into one of the biggest film series of Indian Cinema and even features a superhero – the first of our cinema – Krrish! As the third part in the series, Krrish 3, was about to release, there was tremendous hype and excitement that was generated but at the same time, a section of film goers had their apprehensions which were justified in many ways.

Many of these fears stemmed from the Ra.One debacle, which was also VFX-laden but failed to impress audiences. Thankfully, Krrish 3 is no Ra.One! It has its share of blemishes, but its positives tremendously outweigh the negatives!

The story of the movie: Krishna( Hrithik Roshan) is happily settled with his wife Priya Mehra( Priyanka Chopra) and father, Dr Rohit Mehra( Hrithik Roshan) in Mumbai. Krishna is trying to do odd jobs but finds it difficult to do so since he gets compelled to don his Krrish avatar every now and then. On the other hand, Kaal( Vivek Oberoi) is hell bent in destroying human species from the face of the earth.

At his laboratory in the snow-clad ranges of Europe, he is producing ‘maanvars’ or in other words, mutants, and he has also unleashed a terrible virus that has spread panic in certain parts of the world. It’s time for Krrish and also Dr Rohit Mehra to stop Kaal from his deadly activities. But in doing so, they’ll be discovering some shocking truths about Kaal that can thwart their mission to save the world.

Let’s talk about the glitches in the film first. The VFX in few scenes is not just upto the mark and surely could have been better. Krrish was riddled with advertisements of sponsors but it wasn’t an eyesore as such. But in Krrish 3, it is present in almost 70% of the film and serves as an irritation. The script is fine but has two major loopholes and these were avoidable for sure. Also, it was bewildering how characters travelled from Europe to Mumbai to Singapore in a jiffy. Lastly, the mutants were heavily publicized by the makers before release but except Kaya the chameleon-girl and Striker( the Frogman), none of the other mutants contribute much to the storyline.

But then, when the execution is topnotch and script more or less fine, no film can fail and Krrish 3 is no exception. The script definitely had the potential and Rakesh Roshan builds it up beautifully. The major characters are sketched nicely too and the conflicts and problems come out very well. The first half was good but not great but it’s the second half when the film goes on a high! Note that the film gets slightly predictable at places and yet, one totally enjoys the experience. The finale is bloody awesome and the film ends on a superb note. Most importantly, it doles out some important lessons on goodness and the need to lend a helping hand – the qualities of Krrish!

Hrithik Roshan kills it like never before! As Krishna and Krrish, he was macho, dapper and riddled with a body to die for. Performance wise, he was terrific and looked every inch a superhero! But it’s as Rohit that Hrithik impresses highly! His mannerisms, body language etc were so drastically different that one forgets that it’s actually Hrithik Roshan in a double role! Hats off to this marvelous actor and hope to see him breaking new ground in future as well!

Vivek Oberoi too comes up with one of the landmark performances of his illustrious career. He was totally menacing and justified his character of a super-villian! The actor has proved himself countless number of times and hopefully after Krrish 3, all the doubts regarding his acting capability would stop once and for all! Priyanka Chopra is fine and good to see that she has a significant role to essay in the film. Kangna Ranaut is smoking hot and yet again proves that she’s one of the best actresses around! This was definitely a challenging role but the actress performs it with ease! From the mutants, Gowhar Khan( Striker) gets the maximum footage and does a great job. The other actors playing mutants – Sameer Ali Khan( Antman), Nazia Shaikh( Cheetahgirl), Daniel Kaleb( Rhinoman), Shaurya Chauhan( Scorpiongirl) and Amrit Pal Singh( Swordfishman) – play their parts very well but sadly, are wasted in a way in the film. Arif Zakaria( Dr Varun Shetty), Arif Basra( Dr Alok Sen) leave a huge mark in their small role while Rajpal Yadav( Kripa Sharma), Rakhi Vijan( Kripa’s wife), Raju Kher( doctor), Yusuf Hussain( doctor), Mohnish Bahl and Sachin Khedekar do a nice job in their cameo appearances. The villain of Krrish, Naseeruddin Shah, too features in a scene in the film!

Music is a letdown but songs are well-shot which make it bearable. Dil Tu Hi Bataa is the best pick of the lot. Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is dramatic but at the same, not over the top and seams well with the mood of the film. VFX is tacky at few places but in some sequences, it is out of the world! Action is delightful and definitely at par with global standards. Same goes for Sabu Cyril’s art direction. Mike Stringer’s prosthetics are straight out of life. Sanjay Masoom’s dialogues are convincing, simple, to the point but impactful. Rakesh Roshan’s story was exciting. Screenplay( Rakesh Roshan, Robin Bhatt, Honey Irani, Irfan Kamal, Akarsh Khurana) falters at places but gets his act perfect in the final stages of the film. Rakesh Roshan’s direction, as mentioned above, is terrific. He builds up the entire larger-than-life canvas of the film beautifully and keeps it simple and easy to understand. At the same time, the emotional connect of the film is quite strong and hence, there are scenes in the film that moves the audiences. Also, his direction ensures that audience whistle and cheer for Krrish, especially in the finale. Hats off and eagerly waiting for his next directorial venture!

Some of the best scenes in the film:

  1. Rohit’s experiment fails

  2. Krrish saves an aeroplane

  3. Kaal and Kaya’s entry

  4. Krishna leaves messages for Rohit

  5. Krrish vs Striker fight in Mumbai

  6. Virus attack in Mumbai

  7. The intermission point( terrific!)

  8. Mutants attack Rohit’s place

  9. The song ‘Dil Tu Hi Bataa’

  10. The final 40 minutes of the film

On the whole, Krrish 3 is a brilliant superhero film that works despite the glitches. Most importantly, the story connects beautifully at an emotional level. The 30-40 minute long finale is an icing on the cake. Hrithik spellbounds with his double role act while Vivek Oberoi and Kangna Ranaut deliver outstanding performances! At the box office, the film is going to break records and create many new ones and rightfully so! Go for it, with your entire family, and experience a rocking superhero vs supervillain tale, Rakesh Roshan style!
