Pros:
cinematography, special effects, story
Cons:
too long

I do not know if I am too emotional or the movie was good enough to cause such feelings in me. One would not expect that out of a movie whose maximum charm come out of spectacular CGI effects. I was

crying when the movie ended.

Kingkong is the timeless ‘Beauty and the Beast’ story where the enormous gorilla falls in love with the mesmerizing Anne Darrow. The greenish brown eyes of the ape does not look intimidating as it gazes into the blue eyes of Naomi Watts who plays the heroine, Darrow. The heroine has no less than two heroes in the film with the hero of the movie she is shooting with, and the writer Jack Driscol played by Oscar winning actor Adrian Brody. Jack goes to steep limits trying to rescue Anne. At times these seem to be far fetched as their relationship is not deeply defined. Jack  is portrayed as the ultimate hero who goes to rescue Anne when all give up. This happens not once but twice, in Skull Island and in 1933 New York.

Skull Island, is the mysterious place where the unknown needs to be discovered. Located at a Bermuda triangle like place with rocks and mist all around. It’s like arriving at castle greyskull. Just like the Joseph Conrad book, ‘Heart of Darkness’ which one of the sailors are shown reading, Anne rediscovers herself in the wild, horrific laps of nature. Like Gulliver in the land of giants she fights to preserve her dear life. But it’s not from Kong who is offered Anne as a sacrifice by the cannibalistic tribals living on the island. Kong saves her from every other danger like the dinosaurs and the bats only to lose her.

Those scenes are beautiful when the lady tries to break his sentimental anger by juggling with two stones and breaking into a jig. This occurs even before when the actor tries to break the ice with the beast by displaying her histrionic talents but suitable for an ape audience. How he plays with her and bullies her will make you smile.

Another light moment in the movie is when an enormous army of cockroaches attack Adrien Brody and some more , then he is asked to stand still with the roaches gnawing at his trouser and face so that one can shoot them out.

Kingkong seemed to be a medley of quite a few movies/books. Titanic, Godzilla, Sinbad, Jurassic Park, She, and of course the Kingkong movies. End of it all it’s a tragic love story of a beast, who dies loving his lady love. The scene where Kong’s hands slips from Anne’s grasp as he falls to his death from the Empire State Building will remind you of Jack Dawson of Titanic who dies of cold and his body sinks into the depths of the ocean from Rose’s clasp. Carl Denham the ambitious director and captor of Kong played by Jack Black rightly says at the end…It was not the planes which got him. What got him we know. Size does not matter when one is struck by the devastation of love, rather an impossible love. But Naomi Watts puts life into the squealing character of Anne, who emerges as a good human capable of understanding the subtleties of the sentiment and who risks her life to save her lover. She is reminiscent of Jennifer Connely who loves the human behind the mighty ’Hulk’.

Though the movie is a bit too long…yet it has its beautiful moments like the sunrise sunset scenes and the skiing on ice, which are cliché yet rare. No wonder if you’ve loved and lost or know such a story will cry or feel sad at the end.
