Movie Khosla ka Ghosla

The Plot

Welcome to the Khosla family...we have daddy Kamal Kishore Khosla(ANUPAM KHER) who will be retiring from service in a month's time & has the big dream to build his own house. There's his homely wife, sons computer enginner & American job aspirant Chironjilal or `Cherry`(PARVIN DABBAS), school dropout & ekdum street-smart Bunty(RANVIR SHOREY) & also a young daughter.

Kamal buys a plot of land giving away lakhs of his hard-earned money to real estate broker from 'World famous properties' and loudly shares the plans of his dream house to his family. But beta Chironji is least interested. He feels nothing much will happen here and is already arranging his New York visa through the local travel agent Asif(VINAY PATHAK). But things take a drastic, unfortunate turm. The broker has already given the land to the local , unscrupulous businessman Kishan Khurana(BOMAN IRANI) in return for pots of money. Also, Khurana puts up his board on the site of land. Innocent, honest Kamal Khosla is stumped & shocked. He requests, pleads & begs. Khurana does not budge. His outspoken son Bunty hires local goondas & dismantle the board. Big mistake. The police come next day & land his daddy in jail. The ever-scheming Khurana bails him out and offers to give him back his land in exchange for you-know-it; lakhs of Gandhi notes.

At his wits end, Khoslaji gives up the fight and sits sad & lonely at home. Hurt & humiliated at what happened to daddy, Cherry confides everything to his girlfriend & theatre actress Meghna(TARA SHARMA). He also reveals the unfortunate incidents to the travel agent Asif. What a coincidence! Asif too had a bitter relationship with Khurana. Asif reveals to Cherry that both he & Khurana used to be in the land-grabbing game together, conning so many innocent victims. But, traitor Khurana grabbed Asif`s own family land right under his nose. And Khurana continued to prosper ever since. Asif is ready to help Khosla get back his plot of land. Revenge didnt get a better opportunity.

But shattered Khosla does not want any revenge. He has had enough and wants to simply live a peaceful life. Will son Cherry give up his NRI dreams and help his dad in this hour of need? Will `loafer` Bunty be of any use to save his dad`s honor? Can Asif be trusted? What about Meghna? She loves Cherry but can she take on the mights of Khurana and co.?

How will the Khosla vs. Khurana duel end? Will everyone go back home happy & triumphed or will everything turn out just plain bad & ugly?

My Review

Friends, finally.......I saw one of the best comedies of 2006, after Lage Raho Munnabhai. Lotsa & lotsa applause.

Earthy, natural comedy, realistic situations, absolutely convincing performances, cool dialogues, catchy background music.....makes our Khosla ka Ghosla a hit riot.

I hope no one passes the chance to watch this movie simply because it does not have any `happening` star cast. Its tempting to choose a masala, `fully commercial` fare over this one. That`s why I also wonder why we still classify cinema as `parallel` and `commercial`. We miss out on so many wonderful movies this way. And Khosla is a role model. It shows that even `old men` like Boman Irani or Anupam Kher can keep us entertained with talent that leaves young stars gasping! Do you want your ticket`s worth? Then hesitate not. Grab a seat for Khosla ka Ghosla and go back home smiling ear to ear.

Anupam Kher is marvellous. The man has earned immense respect in Bollywood & beyond as an actor in movies or theatre. His clout is huge. But still he plays the role here with such humility leaving you with a lump in the throat. I wouldn't be suprised if another National award comes knocking at his door.

Boman Irani scores again. But the fact is he has been doing such smart aleck, conning roles for a while now that I`m beginning to feel his performances are redundant. He needs to add variety to his roles. We still hunger for more comedy from him but not simply characters with negative shades.

Handsome Parvin Dabbas has got the best role of his career, yet. He has given a restrained yet realistic effort to play a IT enggineer who dreams big yet does not forget that family is as

important.

Ranvir Shorey rocked. His role of Bunty makes us wish to have a dude like him over a few glasses of beer and long chats about the college gals in the neighbouring street :) Hilarious chap.

Pretty Tara Sharma, Navin Nischol(great job) who acts as Tara Sharma's father, the bespectacled guy who`s Navin's secretary in the movie, the arrogant, ruthless land broker, Boman Irani`s sidekick and actresses who played Anupam`s wife & daughter are the others who pitched in effortlessly. Sorry I dunno their names however their contribution has been immense.

I hope people don`t compare this movie with Lage Raho....Both these comedies shined in their own right. And some of us might question the message the movie conveys saying that it will mislead the viewers. I say let logic be in the backseat and enjoy the movie for what it is - a tongue-in-cheek entertainer. You will enjoy it.

And about cons? ya...the final scene shows us a structure that left me shaking my head disapprovingly. I mean such architecture is passe now. The producer should have spent a bit more money to have setup something more aesthetic. Those who have already seen Khosla ka Ghosla will know what I am talking about :)

Director - Dibakar Bannerjee

Year - 2006

Starring - Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parvin Dabbas, Tara Sharma, Ranvir Shorey

Verdict - Go have a blast - the endearing Khosla family is waiting for you...
